Are your audio files mp3’s or other compressed file types? If so this makes sense – and I just saw a post somewhere that eloquently explained why but I’m not going to attempt to do the same.. Convert your audio files to uncompressed wav’s before editing and you shouldn’t have any problems with them going out of sync

Your system sounds close to my new system. And generally speaking, I would say no – that’s not normal. Right now I’m editing an elementary school “play” where the run time comes close to 2 hours. Plus, I am editing a music video of the kid’s after party for the dvd extras, and, I’m putting together a slide show set to music from stills that people gave me throughout the production lifecycle.. All of this footage is in the same project. Oh, and several After Effects animations I did as well.. Longest it’s taken to open my project was still less than 45 seconds..
Now the next question: Why does yours take so long and how do you fix it? Good questions.. There’s so many factors involved but I’m wondering if you don’t have some kind of bad clip reference or soemthing in there..
What OS? XP / Vista
Where do you keep your project files (including scratch disk locations, etc)? (I have a serial RAID 0 setup and since that’s faster than my ‘C’ drive I put all of my project files as well as video within that RAID array somewhere..Your footage – is it all uncompressed or various codec / file types? (Strongly reccomend uncompressed avi’s for all editing..)
Hopefully someone else may have more of an idea off the top of their heads without knowing the above.. (and after I get the answers to the above, there’s no guarentee that I’ll know what to do either!)

May 15, 2008 at 10:56 pm in reply to: What do you think is the best tripod location in a church?I don’t do weddings anymore either but I agree with both of you.. I only did one single camera wedding (and I did indeed attend the rehearsal – fortunately) but I still find that attending the rehearsal when doing a 3 cam shoot is still important (as is having the in depth discussions with the bride and groom..) But like you said, a 2 or 3 camera shoot does come with a lot more insurance.
I have found a number of times that a grooms man is like 7 feet tall and is positioned in line of my main camera or something else – stuff that isn’t likely to come up in a meeting with the bride or groom. Also, I frequently see plans change during the rehearsal to the point where it requires a change of camera position or similar.. I think if you ask a wedding planner I’m guessing that a lot of them will tell you that the rehearsal isn’t just to make sure that the wedding party know’s what to do but to make sure that all of the logistics they’ve planned work out as well.
But I have found that after you’ve done a numbe of weddings you pretty much know the drill – and there’s not much need to stay for the entire rehearsal – I used to be able to get in and out in about 15 minutes (so long because I didn’t want to be disrespectful and come in and out like a whirling derbish if you know what I mean.) Oh, and heck, I know that my being present at the rehearsal made the bride feel a tiny bit more comfortable with me on their actual day..
The basic principles you’ve been talking about can (and should) be applied to pretty much any kind of event – though rehearsals don’t exactly happen for a sporting event or whatever.. Do a location scout and you’ll be that much more prepared! (Oh, and I keep a small database on the locations I’ve worked at.. Basically just notes about any facility rules or special circumstances encountered… nothing fancy.)

May 15, 2008 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Best way to transfer DVD VOB into editable AVI in PP2?Interesting – I have an older version of TMPGenc that rips dvd’s but I would up with the same problem as Pat – problem with the audio that won’t come into Premiere (though if I watch the produced clip in various media players it’s just fine)..
I did try the trial version of AVS Media converter and it looked like it worked pretty well, but if I remember right, that doesn’t do the ripping – (or am I wrong?) just the conversion – so that would be an additional step in the workflow..

May 15, 2008 at 8:58 pm in reply to: Is there a way to make a new video file every 15 min of the video? Like a preset or somthing?I would set up a batch capture – put the timecode in a spreadsheet and recapture…
I wrote a quickie macro for MS Excel to set up 5 minute imports – only have to put a 1 in front of the 5 and it’s done.. Basically I just enter a name of the tape, a comment, the start time code, and it generates the entries for me, save as a csv and load it into Premiere for the batch capture..
Not sure if this is really what you need for your particular situation but let me know if you’d like me to send it to you or not.. (If so I’ll probably clean it up a bit and give it an interface)

Hi Vincent,
Thanks for the info, I’m just wondering how well it does with a blond with poofy / curly hair.. I’m sure it isn’t going to be perfect but curious none-the-less..–KTFA

Patrick,
If I find the answer to our problem I’ll certainly let you know! (please do the same if you find out what’s going on)It’s going to be quite frustrating (and time-consuming) to have to convert the footage first.. Though it may just redefine my workflow a little and I’ll do my ‘capturing’ and initial footage cut in a different app..

That’s basically what I kinda thought – thanks for the confirmation.. (And I didn’t even think about the road having a curvature to it – it does I’m sure..
Thanks again Simon! (Especially for wading through my verbose post!!) That’s the problem with being a fast typer (at least that’s what I’m going to blame it on!!!)
