If you by the Kb (knob panel) to use with Resolve then you will need to buy the Bt (button panel) as well. You need the Bt to switch between modes on the Kb.
“I guess I need to edit my previous comment that the Kb could switch menus and forth without the Bt… I may have “activated” it by using a shortcut while the Bt was plugged in, and then it continued to work after the Bt was unplugged… I’m not sure that you would get anything if you started it up without the Bt…

Hi Dave,
Since you mentioned that you’re doing a mod service, here’s another question – Is there anything permanent about modding the 580 for Mac, or would you be able to revert a 580 back to PC? I ask because I’m currently running Resolve with a Cubix on a mac and (probably like a few people here) am trying to keep my options open for future machines…
I don’t see the cubix itself in the PCI cards, but I see the three GTX 285s inside it and their link speeds (5.0 GT/s). That’s on 10.7.3. I’d be happy to test anything with you, but I don’t have any 580s yet…

Yes (and no). It selects the right page and tab for me when I go to sizing/primary/offset/qualifier/window or 3D, but strangely does not when I shortcut to blur or key. I’m still on 8.2 so perhaps somebody with the beta can see if that has improved…
Also, in case anyone from BM is in on this thread, my “ref mode” button seems to have no effect, but the keyboard shortcut for “ref mode” does… the diagnostic mode on the panel indicates down/up correctly…

Just tested this…
The Tk (trackerballs) work without any other panels plugged in. The Mf (multifunction/transport) panel works without any other panels plugged in. The Bt (buttons) work without any other panel but without the Kb (knobs) you don’t have control of many or most of the functions… and the Kb can function without any other panels, but you have to step through the menus one at a time (like the wave) because the shortcuts are all the the Bt.
So it seems like they do work all independently, but I would imagine it would be extremely frustrating to split up the Kb and Bt, since the controls are spread across the two and change in context to one another…
As far the mapping, there are some definite missing key pieces… I couple the element with a G13, which I’ve now remapped a number of things to the G13 which I think are critical or should be “one-touch.” Big ones include: “add serial + PCW” “add serial +CPW,” “add outside node” and “b/w highlight” “All/Color/PTZR” and all the six-vectors…

Hi Jose,
I can recommend the 2461w as excellent – but also there is now a smaller, less expensive version called the CM-170w which is still 10-bit and full HD resolution, and as far as I understand, has all the same functions.
If your suite and arrangement and projects allow for the smaller screen… if you need a display to share with clients or have some distance away, perhaps a plasma with color management system is more practical…

Is it happening just when you are in “Unmix” mode? I thought it was random for me at first but that seemed to be a correlation…

The element panel(s) vs. the Resolve panel was my main thing to evaluate this year… I played with both at the Blackmagic booth (with Resolve 9) and the B&H booth (with Resolve 8.x). I ordered a set of the elements so I’ll be happy to shoot some footage using them if nobody else does first…
I have a wave right now, and my main impression is this: on the wave, even if you memorized every key combination and knob, you still have to look down at the board to see which menu you are parked on – with the element you still have to jump between menus, but the shortcuts are assigned to the A or B button… so B > PowerWindow pulls up the power window controls for the knob and button panels, and A > Input sizing pulls up the input sizing for the knob and button panels… This isn’t so different for the wave except that the shortcuts are always in the same place, so you don’t have to look down to scroll. Resolve 9 will also jump into the relevant window when you hit a shortcut, unlike how it works with the wave currently.
I’m a little less sure about the mapping on the Multifunction panel… I like the idea of dedicated buttons for prev node and next node, undo etc… but currently you have to switch between A and B… I’ll have to play with it more.
The balls feel fine – to me it was the rings that were the more noticeable difference from the wave… they feel very good to me, much more like the resolve panel than the wave. Ultimately, the feel of the rings, the consistency of the shortcuts, and the look are the things that convinced me it was worth it, and not just a way to end up US$3,500 farther away from a Resolve Panel…

True, and not only will you be able to pass through audio, you’ll be able to add and sync two-system audio…

As far as the Ultrascope, I hope that the answer will change by tomorrow… The ultrascope hasn’t been updated in a while and cannot receive a 2K signal or even 444 HD signal (although it is 3G, the 3G is only taken advantage of for higher frame rates in HD). It would make sense that they would update it to support the same formats that the Decklink 4K outputs… unless they do, I think the only option would be a dual link > 3G multiplexer and SDI scaler… something to get a support signal to the ultrascope… I’ve never liked the idea myself. But there is no way to make the outputs on the decklink extreme 3d (or the 4K) output both 3G and Dual-link.
3rd question: In the video monitoring section of the config page, are you always working with the monitor output set to “full-range unscaled values”? If the config monitoring output is set to “legally scaled values” DaVinci will scale the blacks up to 64 and the whites down 940. It defaults to legally scaled values, which is convenient when monitoring with a broadcast monitor but your Barco preset is probably configured to expect full-range values. The Barco preset could also be set to expect legally scaled values, but more likely it would be set that way on the rec. 709 profiles.

If you can get the Kuro and the iMac in the same place and use the product line Mike linked to, you’d be getting warmer. I think almost everybody on this forum would agree it’s not OK to work off the iMac screen, not because of the difficulty of calibrating the screen, but because that window in the Resolve GUI is not designed to be color accurate. Even the most budget setup will require one of the blackmagic video interface products between your Mac and the monitor.
