i’ve never imported such a large sequence, i would theorize that maybe you hit a limit in ae. the work around, if you haven’t already done so, would be to break up the sequence into 2 (or more) parts and put them back to back in the same timeline.

the only minor workflow issue i can see is if you need an effect to effect the entire footage (like a color adjustment, etc…) the most efficient way would be to put it on an adjustment layer over the footage segments, that way you only need one effect to effect the segments (vs. one effect for each segment).

April 2, 2007 at 7:19 pm in reply to: No sound after rendering

to turn audio on in ae, click the output module in the render queue and click render audio near the bottom… you’ll also want the set the correct setting for you audio (sample rate, etc.).

generally, i wouldn’t render audio if you are taking it back into an nle, there’s really little reason to and your nle should handle audio better than ae.

as far as workflow, edit first, effect 2nd, bring the effected pieces back into the nle project. effecting generally takes longer, so you just want to effect what you need (why waste time rendering more than you need).

April 1, 2007 at 4:10 am in reply to: Using film footage in 29.97 composition

you’re film shoot was most likeliy shot at 24 frames per second, then made 30 fps interlaced with a pulldown. to work with the film footage you should remove the pulldown and work in a 24fps timeline and then put the pulldown back when you render.

in ae, select the footage in the project window and choose file>interpret footage>main… in this window check the interlace settings, you want the interlacing set to the right field dominance and the pulldown set to the right pulldown (guess usually works well, but you can make note of the order of whole and interlaced frames of the first 5 frames of your footage and set it manually if needed). i think you may also need to make sure that the footage frame rate is set to 23.98.

now you can work in a 23.98 fps comp and should be able to render back out to 29.97 with the proper field dominance and you footage and graphics should look better together.

sorry about the ‘i thinks’ but i don’t have ae with me right now to double check this workflow.

as far as the color shift, this is the yuv-rgb-yuv problem… your nle is yuv color space, ae is rgb. if your footage was exported out of your nle with a conversion to rgb, then try to import your render back into the nle converting it from rgb to yuv. that’s usually the best solution. if you want to stay in ae, you could, instead, throw an adjustment layer over the top of your comp with levels set to black output: 16, white output: 235. but if your footage had not been converted to rgb then you will also need to check the 601 color check box at the bottom of the interpret footage window i talked about earlier.

you can try around every 10-15 frames. but usually you will only need this when ae crashes during rendering (especially if you notice the ram usage hitting 100% during the render). i’m not sure using the purge frame setting is actually going to give you a better render, it would just allow you to get a render, and usually sacrificing speed to some degree.

can you tell us more about you system and what version of ae you are using?

i just downloaded unmult from the link that rendernyc listed; the last changed date for the mac version was dec 7 2003. also i needed stuffit expander to open the .sit file.

there was also a plugin called xmult that did the same thing. i found it a while ago when unmult was hard to find, maybe you could try to google that one if unmult will not work.

just in the plugins folder, you don’t have to put it in any other folder.

you can then apply it as an effect. it will show up under knoll light factory in the effects menu, or you can type unmult in the search field of the effects & presets palette.

find the folder where you ae lives, in that folder is a folder called plugins. place unmult into the plugins folder and restart ae.

i think that unmult has no settings, just apply to a layer and it should make black turn transparent, including any black that may be mixed with other colors.

can you better define ‘jerky renders’? i’m not sure that purging frames at set intervals would smooth out a jerky animation… is it the entire render that looks jerky? is it a physical position change of a layer or effects on the layer that is creating the jerkiness? are you rendering interlaced or progressive?

great, i wasn’t sure if unmult would work if an alpha wasn’t already there, the few times i’ve used it, it was to remove fringing on some logos a few years ago… now ae can handle that if you set the interpret footage setting correctly.

March 29, 2007 at 8:35 pm in reply to: HELP – AFX won’t load for me!

if all those palettes are open in work workspace (or the last time you were able to see your workspace), you may have too many palette windows open… try trashing ae prefs, this should reset the palette windows to the default config.

if that doesn’t help, and you have no other applications running, you may be in for a reinstall (and i think you are).
