I have a comp with 2 layers using the Screen mode and 2 as Color Dodge layers.

I want to place this comp over a footage layer as a lower 1/3 key, but without the black from the above mentioned layers.

Years ago, CoSA, uh, (no not that long ago) , make that, AE had a cool mode that appeared when pressing the option key, it was called premult.

What happened to this feature? And, is there a way of re-creating the same effect?

i started at v3, right after cosa so…

but it sounds like what you might want is the unmult plugin from Knoll that is free.

I downloaded the plug-in but can not access it in AE. I quit out of AE, put the plug-in into the Knoll Light effects folder within plugins, then launched my project and can not find the effect in the Effect pull-down.

Bottom line is, I don’t know where to install the Plug-in or how to use it.

    thanks

find the folder where you ae lives, in that folder is a folder called plugins. place unmult into the plugins folder and restart ae.

i think that unmult has no settings, just apply to a layer and it should make black turn transparent, including any black that may be mixed with other colors.

I have tried putting into the root level of Plug ins in AE. Mind you, there are no filters at this level, all plug-ins are in folders. I should have mentioned that I am running Mac OX 10

Within the Plug-ins folder, I have tried the following folders,

    Trapcode
    Knoll AE
    Keylight
    Standard
    GridIron X-Factor
    Cycore FX 1.0
    3D Flag – AE
    DE CineLook 1.5 Broadcast
    Professional

My question is where do I place the Plug-in, then how do I apply it? Is it an effect or a mode?

    Thanks
    Ken

just in the plugins folder, you don’t have to put it in any other folder.

you can then apply it as an effect. it will show up under knoll light factory in the effects menu, or you can type unmult in the search field of the effects & presets palette.

    Thanks, Mr. Moldyboot,

This plug in was modified in 2000. Does it sound like I downloaded the correct plug-in?

I put it directly into the Plug-in folder, and did the search, that was a good tip. I never think of the search feature. But, alas, not even that made it show up.

I gotta get a frame to the boss, so for now, I will just use a Lum key. Nasty business, the luminance key. Ick!

I miss the UnMult mode pulldown.

    Thanks

Just to be clear, what are you trying to un-premultiply in this case? Something without an alpha channel?

i just downloaded unmult from the link that rendernyc listed; the last changed date for the mac version was dec 7 2003. also i needed stuffit expander to open the .sit file.

there was also a plugin called xmult that did the same thing. i found it a while ago when unmult was hard to find, maybe you could try to google that one if unmult will not work.

Here’s the formula to Unmult a layer without any 3rd party plugs (alas using 2 effects, not one)

    – Channel Combiner
    From: ‘Max RGB’
    To: Alpha

    – Remove Color Matting
    Background Color: #000

Remember: this only simulates how a Screen would look on a black background, since no colours will be mixed.
Meaning: a red layer screened onto a green background gives a yellow result,
an unpremultiplied red layer on a green background gives a red result.
