what are you viewing the raw file in? is it in an nle and on a broadcast monitor? an nle and broadcast monitor will handle fields very well and will look very smooth. if the raw file was captured from tape then it should have fields. ae previews in whole frames, and may look jerky.
generally, in ae, you would like to remove fields (de-interlace) to effect the footage. you don’t have to for many effects (like color correction), but if you want to scale or vertically reposition your footage you will need to. you can then render back out to fields by using the render settings.
i can’t remember all the way back to 5.5 for the exact details for settings to correctly interpret fields and setting it up to render back to fields, but the help menu should explain a workflow for working with fields.

you just need to make a layer 3d by clicking the 3d button for the layer in the timeline. you can then postion the layer in z space. once you postion several layers in z space you can add a camera and animate the camera ‘flying’ through z space or bring you comp with the 3d layers into a new comp, enable 3d and continuous rasterization (button near 3d button, looks like a sun) and then animate that comp’s position to create a similar effect.
if you want a lot of 3d layers, there are plugins and workflows that will help.

he has several tutorials that ‘fly through’ 3d layers, and most of them use plugins that come with ae pro.

yeah, i was thinking that was probably what happened… i think me and dave had tried to troubleshoot same problem for a guy a month or two ago.
i’m not sure you are going to be able to recover the footage that you currently have. you’d like to get new footage sent, but you’ll have to talk to them about how it was shot, captured and edited, to make sure that the fomat is consistent through out.
if it was shot 24p to tape, then the tape will actually be 30i with a pulldown to bring the 24p to 30i, make sure they remove the pulldown at capture and edit in 24p, you don’t want them to edit with the pulldown or the pulldown cadence will get thrown off, and be very difficult to remove after that. and, if they edit in 24p, then you would prefer that they export at 24p.

do you have opengl preivews enabled?
check ae>preferences>preview and disable opengl. that may be causing issues, and if you have a g5 with an agp slot, you won’t want to use opengl anyway (the mac agp cards don’t support opengl 2.0 features, so you won’t get things you need like anti-aliasing and motion blur).
even if you have a g5 with pcie slots and an ati x1900 card (i think the only opengl 2.0 for a g5), you may want to disable opengl when you notice problems. many disable it regardless, because opengl can just be tweaky.

also make sure you are pasting into a solid in ae… the vector paths from illustrator will need to be pasted as a mask(s) within a solid.

make sure that you only have the vector data selected (not the picture you traced) when you copy. that may be the problem.

have you tried other fonts?
i haven’t seen the space not show up as it should, and i can’t think of a setting that would effect just the spaceing between words… kerning would effect the space between the letters too. i would try to reset the text pallettes… select you text layer. then, in both the character and paragraph pallettes, click on the little triangle in the upper right of the pallettes it will bring up a menu. at the bottom should be reset pallette. select that and see if that fixes the problem.
if that doesn’t help, as a work around, you might try typing the words in another application and cut and paste into ae. if you have access to illustrator or photoshop you could type your words in there and then import in to ae. it seems like an elaborate work around, but it should work if you just need to get this done.
as far as centering… the center button should center the text, but it will only center on the insertion point (where you first click the text tool in the comp). if you want to check your layer for center within the comp, select your text layer in the timeline and hit ‘p’ for position. now check the numbers… the first value should be half of your comp width, so if you’re working 720×480, horizontal center would be 360.

i’m a little new to expressions, but i think something like this will work:
x = thisLayer.position[0];
y = thisComp.layer(“Gray Solid 2”).effect(“Sound Keys”)(“Output 1”);
[x, y]copy and paste this into the expression field for position of the layer you are linking to the sound output from sound keys.
you might also try asking in the ae expressions forum.

from the sounds of what ae cs3 can do, you’ll want a lot of ram… 2 gigs per processing core regardless of platform. so if you want an 8-core mac, you’d like 16 gigs of ram ($$$) to get the all the rendering power from the new render engine.
you’ll also want a striped raid… sata2 seems like the way to go, components are relatively cheap and very fast. if your working in sd a 2 drive raid is probably good enough, but if your working in hd you may want something closer to 8 drives ($$$).
you’ll want a way to at least monitor ae in ntsc/pal/hd, if not also ingest and record to tape. i like the blackmagic products, they’re good devices at good price. plus, when they update thier drivers, they don’t just fix problems they also add features (like when they added capture and monitoring from photoshop and, recently, capture to photo jpeg).
graphics cards.. at least get one that is opengl 2. i haven’t heard any opengl specifics on cs3 yet, but a lot of what i’ve heard from ae7 is that it doesn’t utilize the high end features of the pricey pro-line cards that are designed more for 3d applications. so, i think you’ll be fine with a fast non-pro card and spend the thousands of dollars you’ll be saving on ram.
how about a 30-inch lcd panel display too. apple and dell both have nice ones.

try making your text a 3d layer, then animate the z postion.
if you have several lines of text you could space them out in z space then pull a 3d camera backwards through your 3d text layers.
you may still need to animate the opacity to get the text completely off, or possibly adding a light, so the text will disapear into the background as it moves further from the light.
