if you are shooting the video yourself, shooting with a low shutter speed can help reduce the field artifacts when you deinterlace… as a matter of fact you may often be able to use ae’s separate fields method with a little frame blending (frame mix) and get good results.\, although if the motion is pretty fast you amy still see some field artifacts.

alternately, you could set the interpret footage settings as andrew mentioned the drop the footage into a 59.94 comp and retain the data from each frame, without slowing the footage down.

if your comps don’t use any video or prerendered footage, you should be able to change the frame rate of the comp to 59.94 and give them what they are asking for.

actually, if your comp used 29.97 interlaced footage, if the interpret footage settings are set to correctly separate fields, that footage should look pretty good at 59.94 too, so you may not have too much to worry about.

if you want the rain drops to actually line up with the splashes when they hit, i think you will need a 3rd-party plugin like particular.

it is a 3d particle system that will allow you to have an auxilary particle system and a 3d ‘bounce’ plane. the bounce plane would be your ground and it could be set to ‘kill’ the rain particles. the auxiliary system would be the splashes and they would be set to happen at the collision of a rain particle with the ground plane.

you can get even more complex by linking more particular systems together to create ripples, or more realistic splashes.

if you don’t actually need the rain drops to line up wwith the splashes, you could use a particle system like cc particle world (or the same particle system you used) and create a second system for the splashes (actually you might need to create a short, small particle system for a single splash, then use that in the particle system for the splashes).

trapcode has a plugin called lux that can create 3d volumetric lighting effects that would probably be useful.

you may be able to fake volumetric lights it with cc light burst or cc light rays on a small colored circle that would be your ‘light’. the combine that with some glow, probably set to use a&b colors, then adjust the threshold, radius and intensity.

cc spotlight could be used to add a spotlight effect sweeping around the surrounding scene, or you could try an adjustment layer with a color adjustment effect (hue/saturation set to colorize might be a good one to start with, but there are many that would work), then add a circular mask on the adjustment layer, feather the mask and animate the mask shape to make it ‘sweep’ around the scene.

adding a lens flares and animating those to pulse as they sweep then colorizing those to match the lights might help too.

here is andrew kramer’s day to night tutorial. it’s not exactly what you’re looking for but it is a good tutorial, and i think you can use some of the techniques he shows to bring realism to your project.

particle illusion and particular are nice because the both come with a bunch of presets and you can find more presets for them on the web. you might also want to post what you are looking for the particle illusion and trapcode forums at the cow, you might get exactly what you want.

that being said, you should be able to do this with particle effects that came with ae, like cc particle world, it just may be more work. particle world is a pretty decent particle generator… try a point source for the generator, directional (rather than explosive), some sort of small sphere like particle (rather than line), and add some sort of twirly behavior to the particles, and no gravity and see what you can start to get from there.

October 5, 2007 at 9:07 pm in reply to: Motion Tracking Issue

dave’s right, you need to have deinterlaced footage, otherwise the tracker will go crazy…

but once that’s taken care of, the inner box is the ‘feature region.’ if you made the box surround you ‘x’ you should be pretty well set for that box…

if you think the luminance values are what’s giving you problems, toggle thru the color channels in the preview window (the little colored circles, or bars depending on your version, at the bottom of the preview window). check each channel (r, g, b) to see if one makes the ‘x’ stand out more (my bet would be on red). if there is a channel that makes that ‘x’ pop, then try applying the channel combiner effect, and set the ‘from’ parameter to the best channel (say, red) and the ‘to’ parameter to lightness only. you should now only see that channel as a black and white image.

i think you can now try the tracker again (or you may need to precomp the footage with channel combiner on it and track off the precomp).

i think the cow needs a frame rate forum…

i also think that any device that has ’24p capable’ on the box, also needs to have a 24p workflow clearly displayed under ’24p capable’ and in the same point size…. along with ‘not recommended for users with high blood pressure or heart conditions. the ederly and pregnant women should consult their doctors pior to shooting 24p.’

there’s also a quote from one of the adobe manuals that states 24p ‘has become a popular format for low-budget filmakers’… so the box could just have 24p = low budget filmaker… let”s see how many pulldown problems come my way then…

    24p = low budget filmaker… i think that could be a t-shirt or a hat…hmmm

    🙂
