thanks All!
I did see my device on the list for FCP Studio 2, dont see FCE listed.Cant find update link for 3.1 ; searched around.
Anyway, I think I “almost” solved this. It’s a camera set up thing. I’m new to this.
On my camera is something called “ilink conv”
Choices are to have it off (which I had it) or turn it on. I keep it off, because, well, I’m shooting in HD 1080 and want to stay with that. But I turned it on, and bam, VTR ok, and camera connected.
So then I changed Easy setup from DV – NTSC TO HD Apple Intermediated Codec 1080i60 (there is also a 50, don’t know what the 50 or 60 is referring to — there is also a choice called 720 p30, don’t think I”d want that right , since I shot in 1080)
But now, when I choose capture, instead of the log and capture window come up, a box called HDV Capture comes up and ask for file name. you put in a file name, and then click capture. and I think it just starts capturing? is that how it works? the familar capture window is no more.

OH, did not see the first part.OK
I just trashed preferences, reparied disc utility, shut down computer, unplugged everything except mouse and keyboard.I plugged in camera and made sure its on “edit play” mode. Is that same as “VCR”?
They say, “set the correct output on camera” is this in software or hardware? Don’t understand that. I have 4 yo 6 FW pin, then going to the “back” of the computer as they want.
“set correct setting for you media” — is that the , “choose NTSC? help me on that. Its just normal mini DV tape
scrath defaulted to mac hd since all other drives were unplugged.
Of course suffice it to say, I’m still in same poisition, no connection.
“Does you application see the device” How will I know that? when it happens?I also got this message:
” unable to locate the folowing external devices: Apple FireWire NTSC (720×480) Your system configuration maybe have changed or your deck/camera may be disconnect or turned off.Even though camera was on and plugged into the “back: of the G5
I then changed the cable, no luck.
So I’m thinking it’s some of the camera or FCE setting I’m ignorant about. Don’t know why I succeded a month ago!

Thanks Tom!
Ok, I deleted both packages. they had 701 and 702 at end of them. I rebooted did not help.
I did not reinsatll QT as I have a good copy of 7.2 on the computer. What do you mean by settings on the media?
what setting in FCE, should I read off to you?
I’m capturing to an external Lacie FW drive that is working great and has lots of space.
I’m on Sony HDR-HC3 connected from camera short FW cable to computer.
The camera is on and set to play mode.
I’m on FCE HD 3.0
OS 10.4.10Now for Shotsave and Randy and Tom:
The camera does work. How do I know that? Because a couple of months ago, when I was being torured by the issue of dropped frames this same camera to connecting fine. That issue was solved by Tom –(bug with OS. 10.4.9 where you could not capture properly due to a privacey issue with spotlight – thanks again Tom)Now, I take a break for couple of months and now no connection. So I still need help here! I’ve got this project that is finally underway!
( I tell you, I’ve had various versions of this software for years, and it’s always something! I never catch a break)

thanks Misha, that’s very informative.

Thanks Russell
ok, I’ll reley on person handling the project, but isn’t it strange that product with HD in titile of the product , you have to worry that is not deliver HD perfectly for you?(also, curious for my own knowledge what natively means, and why FCE does not do that and the hoops you have to do to get that in FCP)
-
that’s fascinating Russel.
ok so1) as long as I capture with the HD camera I shot I’m in Hd ok
2) isn’t that interesting what you say? One would assume you capture footage to hard drive and it’s 100% perfect quality, so you see why I ask these questions.
“Probably” most editors I use will have FCP, but who knows? some may have AVid etc.
But you are saying there is something about FCE that is of lower quality than FCP.(now for project file itself this does not matter ie, that if I just post video to web, later, the footage could be recaptured) —
but in short, wondering if this should be an option (capturing to hard drive) and handing off a hard drive, or maybe best to just make back up tape and hand off a tape

No problem. Ok Tom is right. Today, I tried non hub, different cable, etc and setting capture folder to privacy solved this long mystery novel. How does Apple make upgrades that allow such to happen? And how did anyone decipher this? Who would make the connection. Bless Tom, no one esle on any other boards had that info.
Still Tom, if you are out there, curious on previous quesiton on uncontrollable device ie convert — (actually I don’t understand difference between setting that – and just doing capture now, which is a manual method also)
-
Rattana, you mean standard DV? why are you capturing DV when you own a HD, older footage? of course I have FCP express HD 3.0 which has it’s own seperate compatibility rules than you.
Tom, forgot to ask:
It was on another board, where someone had brought up using “uncontrollable device” as great way to overcome endless capture problems. You say in FCP Express this would be equivilant of going to easy set up and choosing
DV NTSC CONVERTER instead of regular DV NTSC. This would allow uncontrollable device? But you say not to do this with HD video, which is all I am shooting. Why not? lost on that. -
Oh that’s a relief Tom, about just the folder. But you know, every time I set privacty, a month later, i look, and it’s reset to nothing. Like on reboots Mac wipes out my privacy settings.
The Sony HRD – HC3 is fairly new HDV. (sure it’s ok with FCE?) Again, it’s not on their (compatibility list) “closest” is something called a HDR-HC1E. Or maybe none that is for real, I never knew– alaways assumed all cameras were ok.
Audio — not sure, whatever the camera’s default is. (just looked at manual, just says 16 bit)
thanks

thanks Tom!
You are the first one to mention the issue of FCP 10.4.9 and even the workaround. UNfortunately I do not plan on upgrading to 10.5 until G6 comes out so I may be stuck for awhile ( if I get 3.5 that would solve that?) in meantime I’m save $80 and set privacy.
Only thing is I set privacy to my backup hardrives, and then I guess I would then have to drag everything over to my important primary drives. huge hassle. (what did they do to 10.4.9??) (or I guess I could set privacy to my main drive, do the capture and then unset privacy right?– or just get 3.5)So FCP Express is ok with Sony HDR-HC3 even though it’s not listed on their compatible list? thats nice.
Setting for the media? not sure I understand that, the media is a mini DV tape.
Setting for FCPE. Tom, I’m just going with the defaults of whatever the progam ships with. (scrath disk set to a hard drive with over 100 free Gigs.)
I have FCE HD 3.0, OS 10.4.9; On G5 dual 1.8; With Lacie and Seagate 500 and 750 external FW drives. I was using a hub, but tried direct, and that did not help) (BTW are hubs as lethal as many claim?)
