Can’t Capture, need help!
Posted by Kevin C. on August 16, 2007 at 11:26 pmI’m on the Sony hdr-hc3 camera with FCE HD 3. OS 10.4.10
I can’t get communication with camera to software even though it’s plugged into my G5 directly with good cord.Any ideas why I having this issue. I have captured a few times with this camera with no issues before.
Also, in theory, I should be able to use capture now, but I’ve never succeded with it. The software always says nothing to capture. I just gave that a shot, and I do see a quicktime file on my hard drive, but when I click on it, I see, “the movie could not be opened, this file is not a movie file” (I did not see footage on black screen during this test anyway)
I’m in a deep cave here, is someone can pull me out, I’d appreciate it.
I always seem to have some issue with simple capturing, I wonder if I’m the only one.

Also it might help to answer these generic questions:
Be as exact as you can. What settings are on the media? What settings are you using in Final Cut? What computer are you using? What drives? What camera or deck? How’s everything connected? What version of the application are you using, and what version of the OS and of QT are you using?
All the best,
Tom

August 17, 2007 at 9:51 pmit might be a time saver to try and capture with something like imovie and see that it is a FCP setting not a cable, bus, or harddrive …I have a few firewire cables that work great but not everyday…and it just eliminates a lot of could be

August 18, 2007 at 8:31 pmThanks Tom!
Ok, I deleted both packages. they had 701 and 702 at end of them. I rebooted did not help.
I did not reinsatll QT as I have a good copy of 7.2 on the computer. What do you mean by settings on the media?
what setting in FCE, should I read off to you?
I’m capturing to an external Lacie FW drive that is working great and has lots of space.
I’m on Sony HDR-HC3 connected from camera short FW cable to computer.
The camera is on and set to play mode.
I’m on FCE HD 3.0
OS 10.4.10Now for Shotsave and Randy and Tom:
The camera does work. How do I know that? Because a couple of months ago, when I was being torured by the issue of dropped frames this same camera to connecting fine. That issue was solved by Tom –(bug with OS. 10.4.9 where you could not capture properly due to a privacey issue with spotlight – thanks again Tom)Now, I take a break for couple of months and now no connection. So I still need help here! I’ve got this project that is finally underway!
( I tell you, I’ve had various versions of this software for years, and it’s always something! I never catch a break)

August 18, 2007 at 9:00 pmOH, did not see the first part.OK
I just trashed preferences, reparied disc utility, shut down computer, unplugged everything except mouse and keyboard.I plugged in camera and made sure its on “edit play” mode. Is that same as “VCR”?
They say, “set the correct output on camera” is this in software or hardware? Don’t understand that. I have 4 yo 6 FW pin, then going to the “back” of the computer as they want.
“set correct setting for you media” — is that the , “choose NTSC? help me on that. Its just normal mini DV tape
scrath defaulted to mac hd since all other drives were unplugged.
Of course suffice it to say, I’m still in same poisition, no connection.
“Does you application see the device” How will I know that? when it happens?I also got this message:
” unable to locate the folowing external devices: Apple FireWire NTSC (720×480) Your system configuration maybe have changed or your deck/camera may be disconnect or turned off.Even though camera was on and plugged into the “back: of the G5
I then changed the cable, no luck.
So I’m thinking it’s some of the camera or FCE setting I’m ignorant about. Don’t know why I succeded a month ago!

August 19, 2007 at 9:02 pmA couple of suggestions and thoughts:
Just because a camera “works” one month, then doesn’t “work” the next month doesn’t mean that it’s an Apple-approved camera for that version of software. That’s why I suggested looking at the Apple link to approved devices. Cameras and decks and converters that are NOT approved may very well “work” one or two or three or 20 times, but then NOT work the next 20 times. That’s why they are not listed as approved devices – they fail to work consistently. You still have not mentioned if your camera appears on any of Apple’s approved device lists.
I can’t compare setup with your camera to my camera because they are different devices, but I can review the setup process with mine in hope of finding some step or procedure you may be missing.
I plug in all devices before opening FCE HD 3.5.1.
I select the VCR option on the camera.
I select the Analog Video to Digital Video option on the camera when using it as an analog converter for Betacam SP media or any other analog media; otherwise, the camera defaults to DV media output if this option is left unchecked.
I select either DV-NTSC Firewire Basic under Easy Setup for capturing DV media or DV-NTSC DV-Converter for capturing analog media.
I open the capture window and start capturing video.
Sometimes, especially when beginning to edit AFTER capture, I have to refresh the converters and monitors before the video and audio “pops up” on the monitor and speakers. Maybe refreshing or toggling the camera prior to capture will help FC recognize the device?
Hope this helps.

August 19, 2007 at 10:04 pm“What do you mean by settings on the media?”
Is it DV or HDV? NTSC or PAL? Widescreen or 4:3? Is the camera set to output DV or NTSC?
“what setting in FCE, should I read off to you?”
The settings you select in FCE should match your media.
“I’m capturing to an external Lacie FW drive that is working great and has lots of space.”
Is the camera daisy-chained through the drive? If no, trying connecting the camera to the drive and then to the computer. Do not connect it to a separate port on the computer. Disconnect any other device. It it still is not recognized, disconnect the drive and connect the camera directly to the computer’s rear FW port.
“The camera is on and set to play mode.”
Is it switched to output DV or HDV?
“I’m on FCE HD 3.0”
Upgrade to 3.0.1.
Reinstall QuickTime.
All the best,
Tom

August 20, 2007 at 5:30 pmthanks All!
I did see my device on the list for FCP Studio 2, dont see FCE listed.Cant find update link for 3.1 ; searched around.
Anyway, I think I “almost” solved this. It’s a camera set up thing. I’m new to this.
On my camera is something called “ilink conv”
Choices are to have it off (which I had it) or turn it on. I keep it off, because, well, I’m shooting in HD 1080 and want to stay with that. But I turned it on, and bam, VTR ok, and camera connected.
So then I changed Easy setup from DV – NTSC TO HD Apple Intermediated Codec 1080i60 (there is also a 50, don’t know what the 50 or 60 is referring to — there is also a choice called 720 p30, don’t think I”d want that right , since I shot in 1080)
But now, when I choose capture, instead of the log and capture window come up, a box called HDV Capture comes up and ask for file name. you put in a file name, and then click capture. and I think it just starts capturing? is that how it works? the familar capture window is no more.

August 27, 2007 at 3:44 pmHi there,
I shot a short film last week wit a friends camera and I must have had the camera on the wrong format. I thought it was on 1080i but obviously not. The media I shot in was HDV HD50p, the capture setting is on HDV 1080i60 because Final Cut Pro doesn’t have the correct media setting. I am using Final Cup Pro 5.1.4 on an iMac with OSX Tiger. The camera I used was a JVC GYHD200. The weird thing is, is that when I go to log and capture I can see the visual on the log and capture screen and it says Capturing Clip – waiting for data from device. I can control the camera from the log and capture window it just won’t actually capture it.I hope you have heard of this before and even better know what to do to fix it. If you need anymoreinfo from me just let me know.
Thanks for your time,
Barry Murphy
