    Not true, the first adjustment is for the output level and then you adjust the meters.

  • From the Mackie manual “1. Channel GAIN
    The GAIN controls adjust the input sensitivity of the
    mic and line inputs on channels 1-2. This allows the
    signal from the outside world to be adjusted to optimal
    internal operating levels.
    If a mic-level signal is plugged into the XLR combo
    jack, there is 0 dB of gain (unity gain) with the knob
    turned all the way down, ramping up to 60 dB of gain
    fully up.
    When using the balanced line input of the combo jack
    (1/4” TRS connector), there is 20 dB of attenuation

    Go to Radio Shack puchace 2 1200 ohm 1/2 watt resistors, put them in parallel (=600 ohm) across the output of the FP33 pins 2&3 of the XLR. Buy a $5 volt meter at Radio Shack or Home Depot.
    Set it to AC , lowest voltage scale and measure the voltage.

    If you are recording in a digital format there is no pedestal. Set-up would be set to 0.
    If you are recording to an analog format then set-up would set to 7.5.

    If the audio was at line level and the input was set to mic level, that would explain the distortion. That would be a severe level mismatch which can cause this type of problem
    even when recorded at -24db. (Internal preamps are being overdriven.)
