Bob,
Thanks for your input and you make two very good points. One, a DSLR might be able to shoot video, and HD video at that but it’s not a “video camera”. If I shot video day in and day out I’m sure a dedicated vidcam would be a no brainer. I’ve always like the XL1s and have looked at the HD version.
Point two, I’m not married to Nikon. I tend to be “brand loyal” until it becomes difficult to be as it has in other cases. I know Canon makes very good DSLRs.
I guess the end game here is that I’m thinking about concentrating on doing more free lance still photography and I’m trying to find a way to upgrade that capability on a budget that does have limits. Moving to a DSLR and getting rid of my vidcam would allow me to get a higher end camera and not give up video capabilities. So it’s all about money I guess, go figure. I also wanted to be able at some point to do high speed, high resolution video but those cameras are pricey for sure.
Thanks again,
Ken

[Nigel Thompson] “Or you can pre-order the nikonD800 ($3000) the 36Mp video beast. not in the wild yet but preview looks great.”
Thanks for the input. It’s interesting that you mentioned the D800, I was just reading some in depth info about it. And yes, it is going to be an awesome camera. Thing is, you drop $3K for a body and then you can think about lenses. The lenses I’ve got for the D50 are low end, I don’t think they would do a camera like the D800 justice.
I started using Nikons in the military and carried the “F” regularly along with Leicas and Leicaflexes. Back then a top of the line body and three or four lenses might cost $2-3K…now it’s a lot more. But DSLRs are way beyond film only cameras. I still have an FM10 and some lenses but I doubt it’s worth much.
The thing I like about this idea is I can justify spending more as whatever I get will be replacing a still camera and a video camera. Not sure what I can get out of the XL1s, I can only be sure it will be a helluva lot less than I paid for it…

January 25, 2012 at 8:12 pm in reply to: Your Current Promotion (7 Days Free Downloads) Smacks of being a SCAM!I stand corrected. The trial is addressed about halfway through the fine print in the “terms and conditions”. I have come to expect such agreement to terms to address such things as reselling, malicious use, liability etc so it didn’t occur to me the terms of the trial offer would be buried in such a place. Usually these are general terms that apply to everything, all the time not limited time offers. My incorrect expectation was that this info would be shown in fine print but in a more conspicuous location.
I actually went through the process and when confronted with having to enter CC info I closed the window. I subsequently got an email stating “I’m with VideoBlocks.com, and I noticed that you started signing up for your 7 days of complimentary downloads, but didn’t complete the process.”
I assumed this was a frequent occurrence as three days later I got another mail stating that PayPal had been added as a payment method.
Again, I don’t think there was a concerted effort to be deceptive and most likely reactions like mine and obviously the reactions of others were not anticipated.

January 25, 2012 at 7:25 pm in reply to: Your Current Promotion (7 Days Free Downloads) Smacks of being a SCAM!While I do not agree that this offer is a scam I do understand the negative reactions to it. No where in the promotional emails I received is it stated that a credit card must be provided nor is it stated that the “trial membership” will change to a paid membership after 7 days if not cancelled.
In fact none of this becomes apparent until after a name and email address is provided (captured) and an account is created.
Apparently the outcry about being required to provide a credit card was such that PayPal was added as an acceptable payment method after the fact. To some this probably made no difference.
Even with some of the examples mentioned specifically Columbia House the full terms are stated in the fine print before action is taken and personal information provided. I can’t say about the others as I have no experience with them.
So in my opinion this “offer” is not a scam and arguably it is not unethical. It’s just clumsy and ham-handed, things for which Creative Cow should not be held responsible.

I have another .mov clip from a different source (Footage Firm) in the project and it plays fine, smooth all the way. I’ve never used Media Match before and I checked the help file so I assume you must select a known file without issues and match it. This is what I did with the aforementioned .mov that works and I saw no change. I’m going to render now and see if there is a difference.
Ken
Well I learned a lesson here, not about Vegas but about “assumptions”. I assumed that because the other .mov clip played smoothly in the project, the one in question should also….WRONG!
After rendering the file plays as smoothly as I could ask for.
Thanks for the input and the lesson Grazie.

Grazie,
Thanks for the reply. To answer;
- Vegas Pro 64 Bit Build 521
- From: https://www.videoblocks.com
- I need to know how I can find out which codec is used.
I will try the “Match Media” setting now.
Thanks again,
Ken
ADD: No joy on the “Match Media” setting. And it’s a .mov file, forgot that first time around.

I’m using a GTX 460M and I had to update the drivers before this feature would work.

I have wondered the same thing as with my fumbling around I’ve created them inadvertently. I just put them together so they look like an inverted pyramid and they seem to remain quietly and cause no trouble.

Thanks John, I may not “get fancy” with this short vid, just burn it to a disk as a data file and add some other technical files etc. I’ve been watching a lot of tutorials etc. and the more I learn about V11 the more I want to do an expanded, more in depth production as the subject of this short vid is just one part of what we do. And with seeing what certain plugins can do like Scattershot it’s tempting to use these tools also.
Playback for this vid when embedded in a page has proven hard to nail down. I thought I had it but I heard from a prospect this morning that even after it’s apparently downloaded the playback is stuttering.
So I think I’m going to go back to the designer and see what other options there are for rendering the original animations from Inventor and get smaller dimensions and possibly do away with the gradient background.
Thanks for all the help you and others have given in this thread, it has not only helped with the task at hand but given me inspiration to learn more about using Vegas to best advantage.
I hope you and yours have a safe, happy holiday season.

The Flash solution appears to be render a .mov file in Vegas and then convert using Quicktime Pro.
