Well, thanks to all for replies – I went for the EX1R…should receive it in a couple of days – 1/2″ sensors, SONY $400 rebate, smaller form factor, good improvements over the EX1, used SONY in the past, SxS Pro cards as well as cheaper alternates.

I did strongly consider the Panny 300, but I think the $400 rebate, coupled with 1/2″ sensors did it for me – and as someone said, major networks (Nat Geo, BBC {if with nanoflash} and others) feel the EX1 was good enough, now the EX1R is even better – perfect, NO, but very, very good for 720p or 1080p, plus DVcam (if needed).

Both the Panny 300 or the SONY EX1R are useful, but I went with the EX1R.

    Thanks

Thanks for reply – I’ve been told though the draw back is unless one is recording an event with little or no movement of camera, it’s always possible to bump, jar or drop the hard drive and lose (potentially) all material on the drive…bit risky, I guess I’ll have to get the SxS’s.

    Thanks

thanks for the replies…very helpful…I like the INTRA on the Panny, the 4.2.2 and 10 bit, even the form factor of the 300…I’m just leaning towards the 1/2″ sensors on the EX1R…

I shoot 70% of my stuff in natural light both INT and EXT and wonder how the 300 will do with just 1/3″ chips. I’m used to the SONY Z1U with 1/3″, not so good…I need to move on certainly and need to decide between the Panny 300 or the SONY EX1R. So all your comments have been helpful…

I’ll let everyone know what I went for and why…when I actually decide!

    Thanks

Thanks Martin – helpful…I’m doing the same thing, having shot with SONY Z1U HDV fora while, I’m needing and wanting to move on – EX1R seems like a good camera, especially in low light but the 4.2.0 is bothersome and so is MPEG compression (to me)…

How many MB is the 300? EX1R is 35MB in HQ mode. Is the 24p completely fixed and fabulous now on the 300 – heard it’s problematic but maybe there’s a firmware update?

P2 cards – do they make a 64GB one yet? Are these stable, can you get the 32GB P2 card for under $800 now? Still trying to decide and get pro advice. And just curious – is the 300 a replacement for the HVX-200?

    Thanks

Very helpful reply – I’m still leaning towards the EX1R, but not completely sold so your comments were helpful…the Panny does seem to have a more vibrant color, but I really do like the 1/2″ low light advantage of the Sony….

    Still thinking it over.

    Thanks

Or, I take it, the client can just download the VLC player as well and then how do they get the files from the SxS cards? What’s the process, insert card into their computer via a reader or what? Then VLC player will just play or transfer the video files to their computer as shot?

    Thanks

So does one just have the client download this ClipBrowser software on their computer, pop in the SxS 32GB card in a reader, the client can now download the files to computer? Never done this workflow so am asking basic questions.

    Thanks
