Thanks guys for your input! This is basically what I thought. We have just installed a new server system with 160TB all connected via fiber. So it just becomes an issue of change in this case and the person does not want to change the way he does things.

Yes, that’s exactly right. Each of the 175 = a different project. I too thought that putting the second folder inside the first mad the most sense. But, I kept getting an argument with an editor that this would create lag times in accessing the media inside. Any experience with lag times?

We have 175 folders now, could double + in size. Essential creating a second folder with the same folder name and adding “drop” next to it. This way we would have the basic system folder where everything that is digitized lives and a second folder where other assets would live.
Issue comes in the idea that just having more folder would create lag times.

I’m still not sure how you take a MPEG2 into FCP and edit it without a great many issues? Does anyone have a site where I can read about this and get educated?

I can’t give specific files formats because we supply these files to hundreds of end users. If we customized to each end users desires we would would loose our selves in the process!

In fact, once these have been digitized… they are quick times as is, therefore they can watch them straight-up.
If you are sending them to watch, you are right – the H264 is the way to go!

Is there a real issue with using H264 content in a edited program? Will Avid see this? I know FCP will, so that is not an issue… well maybe beyond quality.
Side note: Since we are sending this content all over the United States and other parts of the world to hundreds of editors, there is virtually no way meet the needs and wants of each editor – though they would like that – that is the reason for three file formats that are as close to universal as possible.

Yeah, this is a tough one! The 45 minutes videos would be very rare indeed… most of our stuff falls in the 15 minutes or less category.
We provide material from TV show for News stories all over the world. Show like Entertainment Tonight Access Hollywood and so on. We provide content and that is it.
With the onset of HD programing and the coming HD broadcasting we are trying to find a solution now that we can test. Sending is always a possibility, but it is incredibly expensive and not green… and we have to be green as possible!
So that covers a few of the restrictions. Currently we try to provide content in three formats that can be used by these media outlets.
Any thoughts beyond this?
