    Actually, sorry, let me follow up differently — please ignore my last response.

    Is pre-rendering what I really need to do here? It is is Premiere, so it was my guess that I need to do it here too. I just want a preview which runs smoothly; if I can do this without creating a new file, that would be preferable. But if I need to create a new file i.e pre-render one, if I understand the term, then ok. Please clarify.

    I have just recently come across the Lagarith Lossless Codec

    and have achieved some very nice renderings from Vegas with it. In fact it is the best I’ve found after spending several hours doing systematic comparisons of various codecs (done because I have some footage with some very fine details which need to be preserved).

    Lagarith not only looked better to me than some other really good codecs (like Huffyuv and DivX) but creates reasonably small files — in my trials, they were 10-20% the size of the underlying, uncompressed files.
