I don’t recall the last mini update being in a keynote either. If we do see something when the store comes up, then it’s probably fair to compare a mp update to the relevance of a mini update to apple.

There are definitely mams out there that are working on modules for this. Basically, you have all of your metadata in the mam and export an xml to the nle to put it there for edit. if you add metadata in the nle, then you gotta export an xml and import it back to the mam. that will be the case for a while until integration between nles and next gen mams expands.

IIRC, we have a MacPro 1,1 and 2,1 using the above ATI 5770 replacement card working with the minidisplay port by loading a new 12 core Snow Leopard system image on those machines.

The thing I’ll have to check is to see if we only used dvi or if we actually used the minidisplay on those computers. There are other situations where we used dvi to minidisplay converters on those machines without the replacement card.

An interesting aside, we have a couple dozen machines with those 1900s in them that have just come to the age where several of those graphics cards are giving up the ghost.

[Craig Seeman] “Alas, Apple’s marketing is another story. In every past case Apple had a long transition such as OS9 to OSX and PPC to Intel. Why they didn’t follow their past successful patterns in introducing new technology is a “wonder” to say the least.”

Yes, launching a new product without the pro-apps marketing team (evangelists) has proven bad. Those guys are all off doing other things nowadays. I don’t recall the reaction to FCServer around here, but I feel, in general, it would’ve been much worse without their “tour” they did that year to educate.

It definitely feels as if someone was asleep at the wheel when they put this up on the app store, before lion, before being completely baked, as evan pointed out last night.

That said, there are a handful of educated people here and others in the community here in NY (obviously including Evan) who have studied the app and are impressed with the foundation. Personally I trust my eyes and the educated opinions that i’ve seen/heard, way more than the copy and paste imovie pro critiques here in this forum.

That reminds me, it wasn’t the first time that I heard this little nugget; Evan mentioned last night that imovie and FCP X share no code base. FCP X was written from the ground up and it processes video in a totally different way. They do have a few similar features like magnetic timeline and scrubbing but they are really completely different beasts.

  • It was a terrific event. Evan was well spoken, knowledgable and entertaining. He gave a great historical perspective of _new_ apple product launches and “old” product deaths. He showed a history of additions to FCP and offered some perspective on why X is the way it is at 10.0.

He made no silly defense of how the product was launched. He was, in fact, very frank and very fair.

I brought 11 editors from my facility with me to see the event. When we went in, there were probably 3 or 4 in the more negative camp and about 6 neutrals and 1 more positive. After they saw the event, I would say that I saw 7 or 8 positives on the product, 1 neutral and 2 negatives – but maybe still a little more comfortable or at least more educated on the product. So some were encouraged and some were made a little less nervous.

If I can sum up the negative feelings of my employees/colleagues, they revolve around changing the workflow and interface. Some are rightfully upset about having to change their methods. But, part of the preso was about precisely that. Some things change for the better and some for the worse. Some things look better at the start than they are and others catch on. We as users, don’t always see all of the reasons that companies dump product lines or change their products. (And certainly the reasons being imagined in the blogosphere are seldom accurate.)
