The offspeed footage was converted using the FRC and also registers at the 59.94 video rate in the browser (along with the 24p footage that was brought in with the 720 60p easy setup) and looks OK. We overcranked at 48fps and it seems to look appropriate. So maybe I’m good to go without laying back to tape as you suggest? I appreciate your help!

Thanks Chris…so I should recapture? I cannot convert the 24p footage that I have captured with the 60p easy setup? I have already began to edit with this footage so it’s going to be a bit of a chore to start over with 4 hours of footage that has already been logged, subclipped and edited.

    Thanks for the info Gary.

I have 24p and off-frame Varicam footage that was captured onto a firewire drive using the 720p 60 easy setup. I was told that I should also use this setup for my fcp project. I have set up and logged my footage this way but the video rate shows as 59.94 not 23.98. Reading about other work flows ala the Ken Stone site I see that I should have captured and set up my FCP project using the 720p 24 easy setup. It says that my video rate should be at 23.98. Do I need to recapture using the 720p 24 setup to get the 24p look? OR can I edit with what I have and pull frames later?

    My delivery is DVD.

I appreciate your help…I am hoping for other opinions but looks like I better recapture.

[Shane Ross] “I assume nothing. Just double checking because often I forget the simpliest things.”

I will check with them… but today they told me it would be best to do the pulldown later anyway.

[Shane Ross] “And if you shot 720p60, you really shouldn’t do the pulldown, as you shot 60i, not 24p.”

We had a pro DIT on the shoot he has assured me that we have 24p…I did double check with him though!

[Shane Ross] “From what I know, if your footage is 24p then it is best to capture with the Advanced Pulldown Removal from the start. For Reverse Telecining afterwards won’t realy do it as it is a different cadence than APR.”

Bummer…they will need to recapture everything? Is there something I can do to change the 59.94 to 23.98 without recapturing or is that a compromise that will impact quality?

I’m sure you’ve heard the old Russian Proverb: TRUST…then verify!

    Thanks for the helpin’ hand!

    Shane:
The Andrew Balis workflow article says to check the advanced pulldown removal box so I’m assuming that they tried.

Is it ok to work 720p60 and do the pulldown later?

[kdwalter] “they experimented but were not able to get the footage to capture at 29.98 it would only come in at 59.94 video rate in the browser… Varicam/FCP Gurus please shed light!”

Ooops! I meant to say 23.98

    Thanks for the helpin’ hand

[Jerry Witt] “Did you mean 23.98 vs. 59.94?”
Yes Jerry I did mean 23.98.

[Jerry Witt] “Also, you do know that you can master a DVD at 23.98 progressive frames. The advantage of doing this is that the MPEG compression would have to compress less frames. So like you said, there are advantages to staying 24P through the workflow.”

How does the end result look? No 3:2 pulldown necessary?

    Gary:

This is not upconverted footage. I’m going to take the footage back to the post house where I had it captured (they used a 1200a deck)and see if we can determine the problem. On some of the other footage that was at normal frame rate I noticed some nasty hits or glitches that we did not see in the field when playing back. Maybe there’s a problem with their deck. Thanks for the info, i’ll have them check the frame rate mode in the Ubit as suggested.

    Tony: Thanks for your help.

Are they dvcpro HD 59.94? verify the clip frame rate also? YES, BOTH ARE 59.94

Did the post house capture via firewire or HDSDI? I have tested both firewire captures and HDSDI with the 1200A and both retain the flags needed for the FRC extraction. I’M NOT SURE, THEY USED KONA 2 AND CAPTURED TO A FIREWIRE DRIVE

Other items to look out for include making sure you have not loaded the clip you wish to convert into the viewer, the clip is at the top of the browser. YES I AM DOING THIS. I ALSO TOOK WALTER’S SUGGESTION OF OPENING A NEW PROJECT WITH THE SINGLE CLIP THAT NEEDS PROCESSING.

One last note what is the sequence setting you are working in? You will get a different overcrank or undercrank effect depending on the sequence playback frame rate. THE SEQUENCE IS 59.94

PS- what is the mac you are using the FRC on?
    Dual 2 ghz g5
    10.3.9
    2.5 gigs ram
    FCP 5.0.1
