It was Reddit to the rescue: “With the move tool selected, there should be a checkbox in the top bar that says show transform options. Uncheck it. “
And that was the solution 😉

Hi, thank you. Yes the borders ’disappear’ when I select another layer but to move/nudge the layer I have to select it again. And here’s that pesky border again!

Oh my – I made it, thank you so much for your help! I went to ‘Files > Relink Files’ and tried to select the correct file, alas FCP crashed. Opening it again. though it did relink and all is good again 😉

Here we go – another 2 hours (!) gave me the answer: in the multitrack view I’ll have to click on the ‘fx’ (on) button so I can hear it ????
So easy if one knows!
