Brilliant – thanks Mark

Thanks so much. I managed to get the DVD to work by burning it from IDVD with a quick time file instead of burning straight from FCPx. You’re probably right – FCPX was using too high a date rate.
Now I’m a bit of a novice – how do I find compressor – is it automatically on the macbook pro or do I need to buy it? I haven’t used Toast – is that user friendly?
help hugely appreciated -
I think I may have sorted it now – I reimported it to the same event – when I shut down and restarted FCP it sorted itself out. I think that was the issue that I hadn’t quit FCP earlier as you had instructed me,
This has been hugely helpful thank you – I have also been looking at some of the tutorials that are also great. Thanks again for your time – I;m on to edit on my newly cleaned out Mac with proper back up system in place – feeling much happier about my project now!!
Thanks -
I really appreciate your time on this – see below for answers..
[Karen Ackerman] “Should I now delete the files from my mac drive in finder?”
You can, just be sure to quit FCPX first. Or you can choose the Projects and Events that are located on your Home Drive and right click and choose to move to trash in FCPX.
OK – deleted and they are now showing in the hard drive folder
[Karen Ackerman] “How do I know they will still link to my original project -”
What is “they”? – by “They” I meant the events but I can see they are still linking so OK
[Karen Ackerman] “is the project in the external hard drive now my master project – do I edit from that now?”
That’s the idea, yes. In your browser, you should see those events/Projects under the new hard drive. Correct?
Yes correct
MarvellousOne final thing – I have another project that I completed and then deleted the media from my FCP Events file in finder as I wanted to clear space. Unfortunately I was a bit hasty and now need to reedit the project – its showing as red in the time line as the media is missing. I have re imported the media and the project into the external drive but its not recognising it – how do I relink it?

Thanks Jeremy – this is incredibly helpful.
OK all projects and events are on the external drive and opening fine.
Should I now delete the files from my mac drive in finder? How do I know they will still link to my original project –
Can I just clear on the process now – is the project in the external hard drive now my master project – do I edit from that now? -
Ok I;m on it – the hard drive is showing up now. I am moving everything from the ‘movies’ folder in finder – all the events and projects to the external hard drive – it will take about an hour – then I can delete the files from the mac drive as they are taking up over 60gb and I only have 2 left. I’ll let you know how I get on

Thanks Jeremy, I am trying to back up to an external hard drive. I have searched the Apple forums and think the problem may be that the drive I want to use was previously used as Time machine – seems to be FCP won’t recognise it if it has been TM.
So the issue is now – all my events were loaded to the Mac hard drive – If I would rather work from an external drive, but I have already done quite a lot of work on my project, is it too late to move them as I would rather keep my mac drive clear?
I will also attempt to back up the project and associated clips to a new hard drive that I have just bought -
Can I ask for some more help on the same issue please? I am studying for a masters in Digital media and a complete novice to FCP. I am trying to back up my work in progress to a hard drive but when I ctrl click and attempt to duplicate the project – my back up drive does not show in the drop down box as an option – I only have the option to save to the Mac’s own drive, even though I can see it the hard drive on the desk top? Any advice? What is the best way to make sure my project is safely backed up (in simple layman’s terms) as I will be working on it for a few weeks and it would be a disaster if I lose it.
Thank you
