Put the grayscale image above the layer you want to apply the transparency to, then set the track matte of the bottom layer (of these two) to luma matte.

If you want to be able to modify the transparency values, you can add (for example) a Levels adjustment to the grayscale layer.

For ideas as to a procedural method, see:

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/dallos_matt/fire.php

However, the sample clip you’ve included appears to have been made mostly manually with a bunch of separate pieces of flame footage keyed out, placed and animated. CC Burn Film could be used, but to get it looking convincing, you’re better off with animated masks that align with fire footage.

Although it might have been done in a completely different manner, you could try the following:

Make the project 32 bits. Make a copy of the text layer and turn on per-character 3D. Shrink the individual letters into small dots, pump up their color to HDR white and scatter them randomly. Use lens blur on this duplicate layer.

As above, without a defined purpose and audience, hard to say what should be improved. You are likely going to get a different answer from everyone.

As for myself, I like the falling strings, except that I would reverse them, so that the letters get formed by rising strings. I tend to agree with Michael that the second effect is unnecessary. You could consider a subtle 3D camera move, such as turn and pull back slightly to add some dimension.

But it really boils down to what it is that you are trying to say with the animation and to whom.

I would enable graph editor view for the property (position?) in question and check it out in graph editor.

Are you referring to the way the word “Stuxnet” is typed in with a slide and fade?

Add an animator to your text for opacity and position.
Set opacity to 0 and position x to -100.
Animate the beginning range from 0 to 100.

You wouldn’t happen to have an old “without vs with” example of the effect?

Was it done as a post effect on the completed render or as an effect using a depth or alpha channel?

The more information you can provide the easier it would be to suggest alternative approaches.

    That’s actually pretty clever.

Here’s what I think he did:

The food was already on the plate when the main footage was shot, and he drops the package behind the table (on the chair, likely).

Then it was edited to remove the food at the beginning as well as to change the dropping package into the spaghetti.

Possibly another piece of footage with the spaghetti falling was used, which would have been done as the first shot so it lands in the same place, but you should also be able to do it by cutting out the spaghetti from a still image of it’s beginning position on the plate and mesh warping it.

It is difficult to answer your question, because you don’t tell how the effects differ from the built-in glow effect. An example image might help. Or the name of the plugins you used to use.
