At least a couple of things:

    – The melting face has been animated, it is not just one image, it is a sequence of drawn frames.
    – Displacement mapping has been used to “melt” the whole image further. Probably utilizing the same footage some frames backward or forwards on a different, hidden layer selected as the Displacement Map for this footage.
    – The other flickering goes so fast it is hard to tell what is going on there, but perhaps Colorama, some extremely rapid Exposure changes (possibly using a wiggle expression). And likely several additional effects.

  • I actually have hard time visualizing why this would be difficult. How many precomps do you have? Can you send a screen grab of what your timeline looks like? What is in the precomps: Footage? 3D text? Plug-in Effects like Element 3D or Particular?

You should be able to just drag the precomps around and put them where you want, and if there is a comp that is too long, you can easily shorten it. If there is one that is too short, you’ll have to increase the length of the precomp and any layers inside it. In theory it shouldn’t be more complex than that, so there must be something I can’t envision that you are having trouble with. Do you have to be frame-perfect with timing? Lip-sync? What is the actual step where it seems to take a lot of time? Finding the exact spot where to put the comp? Something else?

You wouldn’t use it with justified text, as justification would just overrides the balancing.

How “ruthless” do you want it to be? If you want the first line to always be shorter than the second line, I guess you could try and combine it with left indent/last line indent.

  • What does “doesn’t work” mean in this case?

Does it give an error before reaching the end?

What does the animation consist of? Single frames, footage, AE layers, other?

“Am I the only person left in the world who reads through the documentation when I get a new piece of software?”

Quite possibly. I used to read them cover to cover back in the days when printed manuals were included with the software and things were generally more tangible. I find it impossible to read a manual in full on the screen. I find that manuals are not even made with the idea of being read cover to cover these days, so why do so? These days I use them as a per-case reference material. “Classroom in a Book” is an option when you get started with a new program, but it doesn’t cover all the details.

Don’t precompose the layer. Add the masks directly on the solid.

  • One interesting approach is to use Frequency Separation on your black and white photo to pull out just the details and blend it with your color image of the red moon.

The steps on how to create the frequency separation layers is the key point that applies here. You replace your “color” layer with a different photo altogether.

Quick test on your sample images gave this result:

    1) Use “Balance ragged lines”:

    2) You can use right indent with a matching but negative last line indent value to force everything but the last line of a paragraph to break earlier.

Both can be used in the paragraph formatting of your TOC.

Although that looks like I would expect an animation to look like and wouldn’t necessarily do anything with it, if you still want to try and make it appear smoother, you could try the Pixel Motion Blur Effect:
