No, you cannot protect a single photo with password, you can protect either your entire account or iphoto Library with password in Mac.
If you create image of any Mac drive with Disk Utility then you have to give password to protect it.

I have same issue. My Macbook is a mid 2010 unit. My problem mostly occurs on boot up. So, I would like to suggest you to clean your Mac, there might be lots of unwanted data stored in your Mac. The other option, you can try defragmentation for your Mac.
I have used Stellar Drive ToolBox software for my Mac.

Hi,

You have to check the permission of external drive with the help of Disk Utility.
Disk Utility has ‘verify’ option which helps you to check read/write operation.
