Alright, I finally found a workaround. The sequence I was nesting must have been corrupted somehow and that was freezing up premiere each time I tried to draw it into another sequence through nesting.

THE FIX:

-Copy all contents from the original sequence into a new sequence (label the original sequence as corrupted)
-Nest the new sequence into another sequence with desired settings.

It’s cutting fine for now.

Actually the EX1 doesn’t have an HDMI output (see the tech specs here https://www.pro.sony.eu/pro/lang/en/eu/product/broadcast-products-camcorders-xdcam/pmw-ex1/specifications/) . I activated the SDI signal in the menu on both cameras, but nothing so far works.

Thanks for your advice. I did update my video card driver, and it seems to help the playback somewhat, but it’s still pretty choppy. (even on 1/4 res)

Yea, since I’m running PC the PPRoCS5.0.3 update is the most recent one. (the 5.0.4 is for mac only) I tried the update option on PPro, but it’s as updated as it can be.

I actually didn’t build the computer myself, I just purchased the Dell laptop all together, and haven’t really upgraded any of it’s hardware. It’s a Dell Studio 1557 if you want to check the specs.

I tried, like you said, changing the file extension from .mov to .mpg, and PPro did make an .xmp file (and thus decoded the file without Quicktime) yet the result for me was more choppy than the original .mov file. That concept makes sense, not sure why it wouldn’t go for me. Perhaps your Nikon video files vary from the Canon ones.

Yes, I’ve actually already tried to drop the playback resolution to 1/2 and 1/4, and they help some, but the playback is still choppy after like 8-12 seconds.

I first tried it off of my internal hard drive which is a Toshiba mk5056gsy (500GB 7200RPM SATA), and then I tried it with my external WD Pro Book (500GB 7200rpm ESATA{3GB/s}). It seemed to work a little faster on my external drive, but it will still turn choppy after like 15 seconds. (Both hard drives only have 45GB of free space on them. Not sure if that affects anything.)

I watched my CPU and Ram usage on task manager as I played back the footage. The ram fluctuated somewhere between 3.4gb and 2.0gb, while the CPU stayed between 60-20%. (only rose above 50% a few times)

I am running the latest 5.0.3 update for Premiere Pro CS5. (is there another update I should be looking for?)

Yes, I used the Premiere native timeline for DSLR 1080p24. And I tried changing the program window to full res, 1/2, and 1/4, but I can’t get lasting realtime playback on either of them.
