May 24, 2005 at 6:31 pm in reply to: HDLink — HD-SDI to DVI input on Sony CRT — Possible? Pros? Cons?[CharlieX] “i think what Bob is trying to say is that there are no consumer grade CRT’s that offer all the flavors of HD.”
Maybe that is what he is TRYING to say.
But this is what he DID say :“Chris – will there ever be ONE ad agency, one corporate board room, one client of yours that will EVER view an HD show on a HD CRT? IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.”
I simply pointed to some HD CRT’s and questioned whether a client would never purchase one.

As I said before, I’m not debating the merits of using CRT over LCD or vice versa.

IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. So you better get used to color correcting on LCD monitors, because this is what the ENTIRE WORLD is going to own”I’m not debating the merits of using CRT over LCD or vice versa.
But based on your heavy use of infinitives (ever, never, entire) you seem absolutely certain that Chris’ clients are not buying HD CRT’s.
I see HD CRT’s (aka direct view) all the time at retail stores. Surely someone must be buying these. Maybe one of Chris’ clients?
Maybe I’m am misunderstanding your point. -

May 16, 2005 at 11:15 pm in reply to: has anybody used a BlackMagicDesign DekLink Extreme[Peter Corbett] “No, it’s nothing to do with Pro50 codecs once it hits the PC. It is trancoded into the Blackmagic 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed codec. Once it leaves the Pro50 VTR via SDI, it ain’t Pro50 anymore, it’s an uncompressed video stream.”
Yes, I understand that part. DV50 on tape is transferred from VTR over SDI as uncompressed.
But I also asked:
“Is it possible to capture DV50 over firewire in PPRO?”
and you replied:
“Yes, with the latest VTR’s.”
So what is coming over firewire? Is it DV50 or uncompressed?

Yes, with the latest VTR’s.”
I’m guessing the VTR somehow “hooks” into the DV50 codec built into WIN XP SP2 and the setting magically appears as a project/codec/resolution setting in PPRO?
That kind of begs the question…what is the DV50 codec PPRO plug-in from Main Concept used for? Maybe for transcoding from uncompressed to DV50?

May 16, 2005 at 10:35 pm in reply to: has anybody used a BlackMagicDesign DekLink Extreme[Yves De Muyter] “Capturing DVCPRO50 is not a DeckLink issue.”
I thought that was the case…that capturing dv50 is not possible with the Decklink.
I still would like to know how DV50 is handled in PPRO. I’ve read that WIN XP SP2 has the DV50 codec and Main Concept has a DV50 plugin for PPRO. Also Peter has mentioned using DV50. But I have never heard how DV50 is used in PPRO. Does DV50 need to be transcoded from another file format? Can DV50 be captured natively over firewire as it can with FCP?
Please explain how. -

I’m not sure I understand. Peter said “I use the SDI-only Decklink with DVCPRO50.”
Is he capturing in uncompressed then converting to dv50 or capturing to dv50 directly over SDI? Also, is it possible to capture DV50 into PPRO over firewire as its done in FCP? Does the Main Concept plug-in work for this? Or is it done some other way?

Are you using the Main Concept DV50 codec plug-in or a codec included with the Decklink software? Is it possible to capture DV50 over firewire in PPRO?
