Thanks for the link Rafael. I did read Stephen’s article, and it was pretty informative, but didn’t really answer my question as to what would be the best solution. I really mis-spoke in my original post, as my graphics aren’t so really “flickering” (getting light and dark), but the edges are getting a bit jagged as the text (and some small horizontal boxes that are moving towards the camera and at a slight angle) move closer to the camera. From his article, it seems to be that DV is the problem. So what to do to have great graphics in a DV project? Maybe change the rectangle boxes to some other shape? Should i create the Motion project in higher res (HDV or HD?) and then bring it into FCP? I figure there must be an answer.

As an aside, i also had just purchased Stephen’s two Motion tutorials that he mentioned. They are FABULOUS filled with lots of detailed info on how really dive into Motion 3…but nothing in them (that i’ve seen) about jagged Motion graphics in FCP.

Any other ideas that might help?

Hi Frank,

I just downloaded/purchased Ripple Training’s Motion 3 bundle. Several hours of tutorials that will take from identifying everything on the screen to some pretty complex stuff. I’ve only gone through the first 4 tutorials (only about 18 more to go!), and have already learned a ton…enough that i will have to refer back to them often to remember all the keyboard shortcuts. REALLY worth the $200 investment already…

the MotionSmarts looks like a great tutorial that ends up with the desired effect, but i figured there must be a quicker way these days with Motion 3. i just got Ripple Training’s pair of Motion 3 tutorials that are GREAT, but so far i don’t see anything about the reflection thing either. i was looking to do the shrunken video box on a black background, with the video reflected underneath it…yes, an effect that is getting terribly over-used these days, but i know my client will think it’s pretty cool.

unless anyone has found a quicker way to do it, i’ll go with the MotionSmarts, and/or try the fx factory download.

well, then a web guy sent me the link to get the Riva FLV Encoder…but for some reason it didn’t like my FCP-created QT file…

i guess you do get what you pay for, eh?

so, it looks like the options are:

on2 flix (pro?) for $249,
flix studio for $430,

or

Sorensen 4.5 compression suite for $250.

any preferences between the two? any other cheaper alternatives to go from FCP to a flash (FLV) file?

thanks Jeremy. at this point, this was planned to be an 8-hour seminar, split over 4 (SD) DVD at 2 hour a piece, so they definitely won’t be small enough in HD to cram onto anything less than HD/Blu-Ray at this point. i realize Blu-Rays are in the 25 GB area (aren’t they?) so is that similar in project length to a 4 GB SD DVD?

i’ve had the very same problem, on various builds of FCP. yours is not unique, and i have found no workaround.

Hey Jeff!

It worked fabuloso! (once i did the little tutorial) very cool, exactly what i was looking for. i downscaled my images 30%, but it made an exponential difference in the amount of time saved when creating and rendering the Motion movie and playing back in FCP.

resetting presets worked! once i remembered what i was supposed to do, it has captured flawlessly all day.
