That one looks good, as does the one that Jeremy pointed out, but i bought a ADVC-110 (Grass Valley) and it is working great! Just plug and play, and it converts on the fly. There are a few squirrely things about it, but overall I am really liking it. I did a side by side test between using this and doing the transfer to a BetaSP tape first…and there wasn’t a whole lot of difference. The beta version looked a little warmer and maybe slightly less grainy, but probably not worth the fact that it takes twice as long to do it that way. This box was $280, and I would’ve preferred a cheaper solution, but at least I can crank out some lovely pristine VHS tapes into my system with very little hassle. It’s kind of a crime that my Decklink card wouldn’t do the trick…

I would like to try a TBC and do a side by side comparison, but i would guess it wouldn’t look much or any better than these other two options. Thanks guys for all your input on this!

did it give you “smooth” (well, as smooth as VHS can be!) video in FCP? that is, i wonder if it looks better than the slightly bouncy transfer to BetaSP tapes first? how much did it cost? i’ll be interested to hear the name when you get home. thanks for the reply…

that sounds like what i’ve heard before (the TBC part), but if the VHS signal goes through a BetaSP deck, doesn’t the BetaSP deck sort of act as a TBC? I’m about to embark on a lot of VHS transfer into FCP, and would really rather skip the step of actually RECORDING to BetaSP tapes first, and THEN capture, but if that is the most stable way, I guess that’s what I’ll do…

I could, and I’ve done that in the past, but in the end I have about 50 2-hour VHS tapes to GRADUALLY over time, transfer to DVD (these are old family tapes, my wedding, etc.). So, it’s a lot of Beta tape, plus I really want to do a bit of editing of all this footage, so I would much rather dump it right into the computer instead of going to Beta tape first, THEN into the computer. I know there MUST be a better way of looping my VHS THROUGH my Beta (though not record to it) and then into the Mac, but like I said, I never seem to get a rock-steady signal from my VHS that doesn’t end up having the BlackMagic Decklink splash screens sprinkled througout the capture. This is why I tried the $99 Pinnacle Video Capture dealy bobber…

well, i didn’t get anything even close to my original VHS stuff. It was really terrible. like i said, out of sync (and my VHS was in sync), VERY blocky stuff most of the way through it. turibul, turibul, turibul

ya, like i said i’ve never had very good luck patching the VHS signal through the BetaSP 1800 and then into the Mac via my Decklink card. With VHS, i continually get those dropped frames (or loss of signal, or whatever it is), which actually just ends up inserting a decklink splashscreen. very annoying!
