exactly. it looks fancy when you see the interface but frankly the simple color correction tool in imovie is better.

thanks for the response but the color correct mode doesn’t really do what i want. there is no exposure control and the historgrams and waveforms aren’t very clear. i way prefer the simpler controls in after effects where you can make adjustments right on a composite histogram. see image below:

even though this thread is ancient, i thought it might be worthwhile to straighten out some misconceptions posted here. if you use the video mixdown method to export hdv, your just wasting time and drive space.

hdv is encoded as mpeg-2 which is a long gop format and not compatible with quicktime’s mov container format. this is related to the encoding method used on dvd’s. m2t is a container format to combine mpeg2 and audio into a multiplexed file. so, the m2t export from the avid is the quickest way out. it’s essentially “same as source” encoding for hdv. once you have your m2t file, i recommend converting with the mpeg streamclip to something better for viewing and delivery.

i found another post by zelin:

“You need the Keyspan (tripplite) USA-19x USB to RS232 adaptor, and then an additional Addenda RS-2/8 RS232 to RS422 adaptor for reliable VTR control.”

before i spend $100 on this, can anyone confirm that this is what i need? thx, josh

ryan hardison figured this one out. here’s our email exchange on the subject:

ryan – thanks for replying. i didn’t see the apply button before. much better than saving on quit which is what i was doing. i’m sure you are right about boris saving the effect in the avid project. i just played around and it appears that it is saved a a precompute hidden file within the sequence. that makes sense but it isn’t intuitive from the dialogue box that was popping up when i quit avidfx. thx, josh

If you have the effect editor open on one of your Boris Effects, then just drag the effect icon from the Effect Editor to a bin to save a copy of it that then can then be dragged and dropped onto another clip. Or you can save that bin and move that to another project or avid and then apply that effect to clips in that project.

“The RS-422 deck control most certainly DOES work. I have been using it to test the IO capture with BetaSP and DVCPRO HD. Works fine.

i dunno, i just spent 2 hours getting my mc 5.53 and io express to see a deck connected to it with no joy. same deck & cables work fine on my meridien. i guess i will try the keyspan thingy and see if that works.
