  • Wow! I posted this a loooong time ago ☺

If I were you I would try a few things.

1: install the latest version of quicktime pro for pc
2: see if mpegstreamclip accepts the qt ref
3: install an older version of media encoder in addition to the latest version. You can easily do this by opening the creative cloud desktop app, scrolling down to Media Encoder, clicking the dropdown menu and selecting “previous versions”

    Good luck!

    Awesome. Works like a charm!

About bounding the resulting value: is that why you added the .value; ? Because the expression works without it in this instance.
How would you bound the value if you wanted slider 100 to correspond to completion 50%. Not that I want that but just curious to see what the code is to do that.

    Thanks a lot!

  • I never pinpointed the problem. However I have my suspicions.

1: I have a feeling that perhaps an update for quicktime messed everything up since, if i’m not mistaken, AME relies on QT to open the QT refs from avid.
2: If I recall the order of events correctly, things started going haywire after an AME update, just as in your case.

I tried many things to resolve the issue but in the end it drove me so bonkers that I just decided to do a clean install of macintosh, Avid MC7 and Adobe CS6 master collection after which I updated everything as needed (mac, itunes, qt, adobe etc.). Everything works fine now.

This leads me to conclude that none of the updates (qt, AME) necessarily messes things up. It’s probably just some buggy thing that you don’t even want to understand the workings of but it must be something like: If Jupiter is aligned with mars, you have seen at least 2 hedgehogs in the past year crossing the road or have petted a goat with your left hand on a friday, you shouldn’t install AME updates. Seriously, my best guess 😛

Spent 2 hours chatting with adobe and they couldn’t even fix it.

    My advice:

Fresh install of you os and software.
Always run your OS and software from one hard disk and store your data on a separate disk.
This way a fresh install is a simple and painless operation.

Sorry that I couldn’t give you good news!

    Michael,

I need your expertise once more:)

I’ve started working for a television production company. Saturday is my first day there.
I’m going to be receiving clips from several people (mostly laymen) and will have to import them in Avid and edit with them.

In other words, some clips may be 0-255, some 16-235 but I won’t know which are what.
What is a good workflow in your opinion to keep the colors correct for all the clips? I’d rather not import the clips and then go over them one by one to see if all the colors have come through correctly.

I think this might solve your problem then 🙂

    You’re right:) I’m using Cinestyle.

So i’m presuming cinestyle increases your dynamic range by raising black to a value somewhere above 16 and white somewhere below 235 so that stuff that would normally be clipped is now registered as a legal value (i.e. between 16 and 235 instead of 0-16 and 235-255)..? That is why you need to apply a LUT or colour correct cinestyle footage; so that black is once again made black.

    Am i right ?

This is film with the lens cap on. Not from the 5d though but from my 60D (the 5d was a rental). However, this shouldn’t make a difference.

Is is strange that black is not at 16?

I’ve never used the Marquee tool before. However I strongly recommend you start using After Effects for this kind of stuff. If you don’t know how to use it yet, it’s well worth the investment.

    Here’s a nice extrude tutorial:

And if I’m not mistaken you can download a trial version of After Effects on the Adobe site.

  • I tried it, and it does work. Collapse also works.

But I never needed to do this in the past. Ref Exports to AME always used to work just fine.
I’m just one of those guys that can’t accept a workaround. I’m such a control freak when it comes to my software; I can’t accept bypassing a problem 🙂

Furthermore, doing a video mixdown takes a while. Doing a qt ref to AME takes only a second 🙂

  • version 6.0.2.81

    Will do that!
