Trapcode’s ‘Shine’ sounds like what your looking for. This is an excellent plugin which creates a ‘stream of light’ effect. Also, if you don’t want to buy Shine you can use AE’s built in version, Radial Blur, which isn’t as good as Shine, but can do the job in many situations.
