Take a careful look at the lighting, and try to match the lighting on the object you’re “holding” to the lighting you’re in. If there would be any shadows cast by you onto the object, create those, and if the object is reflective, think about what would reflect where. If the object is a still, this would be easy to do in Photoshop.

Sure…take a look at the Top View. You’ll see that the text is probably on the same plane as the background layer. Just move your text in front of the background plane in Z Space. That will fix the problem. You could also put an Adjustment Layer in between the two intersecting layers – this will break the 3D effect.

There really isn’t an optimal size or resolution that “fits all”. It depends on what you’re doing with each still. Is it the “hero” of the comp, so that you’re zooming in on it, and showcasing it larger than full screen? Is it lit such that you can get away with some loss of resolution because it’s a background piece, or in the shadows? Does a still only appear as about 1/8 of the full screen size? What is your final output resolution?

Could you possibly use two Mirror effects, and link them via Expressions so that as one center point moves, the other moves in an inverse number? Does that make any sense?
Also, would the free Omino Snake plugin be of any use? Here’s a link to a tutorial and the download (Mac only, apparently):

There are guys here much better versed in keying than I am. You may get some alternatives. You may be able to feather the mask a bit after you Roto Brush (with some of the new mask tools), but it won’t give you the fine hair key you’re looking for. But, that said, to get a fine hair key, it has to be lit correctly, which doesn’t sound like what you’ve got.
