You answered my question below on a z800 workstation, and it was very helpful – I’m doing just what you suggest – weighing the laptop against the workstation, and trying to decide which will better serve my needs, at a price I can afford. I can get that laptop today for 2000 bucks, and the z800 I want is more in the 4 – 6 thousand range, probably not including the Nvidia card I need for 3DS Max 2011 and Terragen 2.
I had checked out the Adobe specs, of course, but “can run” and “runs so I can actually get some work done” are often worlds apart. I’m mainly going to use the laptop for field work (capture at shoots) and meetings that need a demo shown (sales calls to sell my services). It’s a tough call, because I could actually be getting some work done while I’m being held at bay by a potential client who doesn’t respect my time. Just kidding -there are none of those…

I would try importing the project (.aep file) into a new project, and hope for the best. It sounds as if the file got corrupted, in which case the import may not work. If it does, try rendering again, and if there’s a problem, start deleting elements one by one. If you’re lucky, just one of them is the problem. Good luck!

Depending on how random you want the effect, could you assign the master animation to a layer, then assign the layer to a particle effect, such as Trapcode Particular, which will allow you to output from a grid, or in a much more random form? I guess it depends on whether you want color variations along with a random motion effect, in which case you might make four or five “master” animations, then assign those to precomped layers, and build you final animation from those.

I would start with a low rumble (earthquake like) as the camera shake starts, and use a shattering glass (multiple copies to fit the full shatter time) sound, maybe slowed down a bit for the letter fx. Findsounds.com is a good place to start.

It’s a tricky one, but thanks Dave. Most of what I’m currently doing involves lots of graphics from AE CS4, going into Premiere along with Camtasia software captures. So I’m lucky if I’ve got 4 layers going in Premiere. Right now, my dual-quad is doing just fine handling the workload, pretty much in real time, at 1920 x 1080. But the wrinkle is that I just bought the CS5 Master Collection, and I want to get the upgrade to CS5.5, so I think the old quad core is going to become my desktop machine, and part of a little render farm for 3DS Max.
I just want to be ready for any crunch work, and I’m currently working on a 3D Studio project that is very render-intensive, so it’s sort of a dual purpose machine I’m looking at getting. I think the HP looks like a pretty good fit. Thanks again.

What Adobe packages are you primarily using on the HP? I’m planning on using the CS5 (soon to be 5.5 upgrade) Master Suite, focusing mostly on AE, Premiere, Photoshop, and Soundbooth (soon to be Audition), plus Terragen 2 (a real RAM hog), 3DS Max 2011, and that’s about it.
I’m just curious what you’ve found in your experience to be problems, or tweaks you’ve made. What video card are you using? Thanks.

I’ve just begun looking at this issue myself, as a recent purchaser of CS5 Master Suite. I’m going to need some real horsepower. I ran across this on the Adobe site, and I think the videos give a pretty good grounding in multi-processors, although they are HP centric:

You won’t have to dislike Soundbooth for long. It has reached its’ end of life. As of CS5.5, Adobe will be providing Audition as its’ audio workstation software. I think this is a good thing:
