Well I have used the progressive setting and it look a lot better than interlaced but slow motion do not. So I am shooting some in interlaced. My water camera shoot only interlaced so I will be turning most of those clips into slow motion. Anything out of the water that does not need slow motion I am using progressive.

With shooting got to have the sun behind or you just can’t get the colour you want. This mean if I shoot in the morning on the east coast of Australia I shoot from a headland or water, I don’t shoot off the beach much unless I am looking down the beach normally south, winter is better as the sun is more in the north. So basically you need to move around to get the right light. That is if you care about the colour and clarity of your image.

Import you files as HD do all your editing in HD the once it is finished then down convert it to SD for DVD. I have found that give me a better image. If you shoot interlace, de-interlace you footage before exporting it to a compressor.

I have used a t-shirt, towel, plastic bag to cover the camera, but I have now put together a water proof canvas cover that I made myself as I also have a 400mm camera and lens mounted on the Z5. Having covers are more of a hassle to use the camera, but I guess you have to weight that up with what the salt air can do to it.

Thanks for the replay. To make sure I get a true 24 progressive, is true progressive call native 24p. Where as when they call it scan 24p that is simulated 24p?

With final Cut Pro I gather there is a workflow where I can set up my project to be 24p native (I am currently on FCP 5 so I could not find a Pal setting (25p) but there was a NTSC set for 24p). I am waiting for FCP7 as I don’t really need to start editing my next 2 projects until May and apparently (what I have read) most people think it will be available by April ( at the NAB thing). So if it is not available now (progressive settings) I gather it will be in version 7?

Is there the same thing in DVD Studio Pro (progressive settings) or does that need to be out putted to DVD in a interlaced format for playing on TV?

I am planing to shoot in HD, then after editing convert down to SD to put to DVD. I am hoping this won’t produce a lower quality image than if I shot on SD and product a SD DVD. I want to shoot and edit in HD so in the future I can product a HD version of the movies.

I have found a camera that seem to fit everything I need, it is the Sony HVR Z5PU it is switchable between NTSC and PAL, it is HDV, it has a big enough zoom which I need (surf footage), it has a smooth slow motion function, is good in low light, can record to tape of card, has XLR audio connections. It said it records native 24p.

Thanks for your reply, as I mention earlier in the thread I have two camera’s and one I do not think has a progressive setting. This camera is used for water footage as I mainly shoot surfing ( freewayproject.com ) so if there is anything I can do to get both cameras footage looking like I need that would be really helpful.

I have adjusted my black settings but that was just a guess as I was trying to remove that handy cam look, but no, I have no idea if what I did was even close to correct. I normally have been making my darks a little darker, and giving a little bit more colour saturation. But this is just guessing. If you have any information about Colour Correction that could help me out, or somewhere that I could read up on it, it would be greatly appreciated.

So the answer to your questions
“I’ll bet that your black levels aren’t properly set.” they are probably not set correctly
“Do you know what they should be?” no idea, I just guess
“Have you checked them?” yes I have checked them, but that doesn’t mean I knowing what I am doing.

And again with the colour correction issue it is like I am walking through a jungle at night and I keep smacking my head into trees.

I think I get what you mean (as I had a quick read on interlace). Because interlace has its image information over 2 frames (odd and evens) when I was de-interlacing I was taking away half the information there or losing the quality. With progresses as each frame rate is whole.

I am in Australia, so yes that why it is Pal, thanks for letting me know 25p will be the same as 30p or 24p. I mainly shot surf footage, freewayproject.com and that is why the interlace problem has been such an issue, with all the movement I fill.

Sorry to annoy you again but after digging my manual out my Canon XL2 has a option of 25p which it says is progressive, but it then says:

25p Mode
Records in 25 fps progressive mode and outputs signals converted into 50 fps interlace.

Would you or anyone know if this meant that I am still going to have interlaced footage. To me how it is written seem to suggest that it will record onto the tape in interlaced. If that is true if I was saving to a hard drive instead of tape would this solve that problem.

I had a quick scan on the internet to see if my camera shoots progressive format. I have a Canon XL2, on one site is said it did but I have a PAL version of the XL2 and on it is only an option of 25p or 50i. I gather there must have been an updated version there some where? I also have a sony HVR-A1P but no idea what that shoots.

So if I can’t find it in the manual that there is a 24p or a 30p shooting option. It means I have to save up again for a new camera and will have to put up with it for now?

I gather there are not other solutions to this?
