Hi Jeremy,
Thanks very much for the tips! Why put myself through this trouble? Good question! I guess that I’m under the impression editing in 23.98 will yield the most flexible deliverable. The producers want to go out to film only if the movie is successful enough to warrant it (i.e. major festivals, etc). Obviously, they

Dear Shane,
Thanks very much for your help! As I mentioned in my initial post, I am currently shooting and experimenting with test footage for an upcoming HD feature that is going to deliver in 1080p on BluRay and/or HD-DVD, and I’m attempting to establish the best workflow throughout post. Ultimately, the feature will be shooting on both the HVX200 and the HDX900 cameras in 1080/24pN, most likely to FireStore drives, and I’m attempting to determine the proper way to edit the footage for 1080p delivery, and – if we’re lucky – eventual output to 35mm film.

Thanks, everyone, for your help and information. Here is what I have been able to gather based on your responces (and some more questions):
If I shot in 1080/24pN (which I did), then the resulting footage was recorded at 23.98 with pulldown making it 29.97.
Question 1: Do I need Final Cut Pro 5.1.2 in order to remove the pulldown from the 1080 29.97 clips, or can I perform the same operation using FCP 5.0.4 and CinemaTools?
Question 1: If I remove the pulldown, then do I would want to edit at 23.98?
Thanks again!

I’m sorry folks… I realize that above I wrote “pn” but what I meant to refer to was “pa.” Thanks again for your advice!

[gary adcock] “The HDX900 lays 1080i60 to tape– so the format on the firestore would be the same.
You would have to use the pulldown removal in your NLE to get to a 23.98 psf video file.”I am currently using Final Cut Pro as my NLE. If I recorded 1080i60 as you described, do I then CinemaTools to remove the pulldown? Will the resulting footage be the same as if I recorded 1080 23.98 in camera? What are the timecode issues for this workflow if I later need to recapture lost media from the tape backups? Thanks in advance for your time and answers!

Does anybody know if you will be able to simultaneously record 1080 23.38 to a FireStore drive AND to tape???

Dear Mr. Merritt,
Thanks very much for taking the time to respond to our posts! Can you please address the question of whether or not the 1080 resolution in the AJ-HDX900 is “true” or whether there is in fact an upconversion process taking place?
Also, I have been trying to find out if the AJ-HDX900 can record to the FireStore drive as well as to DVCPROHD tape (in camera) simultaneously using the 1080 formats?
Thanks again for your time and consideration!

January 30, 2006 at 12:35 am in reply to: La Cie 600gig Big Disk Extreme any problems?I have two LaCie Big Disk Extremes 500gb, the Bigger Disk Extreme 1TB, and the Bigger Disk Extreme 2TB. My experience is good on average but extremely inconsistent. Between the four drives I mentioned every single one has a different amount of noise, ranging from whisper quiet to jet-engine loud. Some even make grinding or beeping sounds, and I would swear that they were about to die any second, if not for the fact that they have worked perfectly like this for over a year.
Speed is also inconsistent. Using FW 800 I get the best results and have less than 1 dropped frame on average every 5 hours (of constant digitizing) across the board. Using USB2 and FW 400 however I again have mixed results; sometimes flawless, sometimes unacceptable.
I can’t think of any hard drives that work better, however, I think QC is an issue with LaCie, and you might have to open up two or three boxes to find a “perfect” one.
