I am shooting to P2 cards and also to the CitiDisk using the HVX200 and am editing using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4. I was told that after importing footage shot in either 1080 24p or 1080 24pn I would need to go to “Tools” -> “Remove Advanced Pulldown.” When I select that option however, Final Cut Pro gives me a message telling me that the footage does not contain advanced pulldown. Isn’t that what the “pn” feature means? Am I doing something wrong? Neither setting requires rendering on the Final Cut Pro timeline, but now I’m unclear wether I should shoot in “p” or “pn” and wether or not I am actually getting 1080 24p footage… Please advise! Thanks in advance for your help!

I’m sorry folks… I realize that above I wrote “pn” but what I meant to refer to was “pa.” Thanks again for your advice!

I think when you shoot 24pa, the CAMERA removes the pulldown. Shooting 24p includes interlaced frames that make it possible to show 24p material on a 60i television.

Only shoot 24p if you know the end product will be displayed on a TV.

But, I could be wrong. It’s all very confusing.

    Dear James,

Your assertion is not accurate. Panasonic’s pA mode (stands for “pulldown advanced”) pulls down 24p frames using a known cadence that can be detected and removed by compatible software (i.e. Final Cut Pro) when the “removed advanced pulldown and duplicate frames” option is selected in said software. The result is 29.97i footage out of the camera that can be easily converted in post to “true” 24p (23.98p) files for editing in a 24p (23.98) sequence.

24pN (stands for “pulldown native”) simply ONLY records the original 24p frames with no pulldown involved. The resulting footage will be 24p out of the camera, resulting is slightly longer recording capacities.

The regular “24p” mode uses a different pulldown method is not removable. The image aesthetic will resemble 24p, but the resulting footage will always be 29.97i.

    I hope this helps!

    Best,
