I’m about to digitize most of my old DV tapes so I’m going to buy a new FW drive. Anyone had any experience of this drive? Also, is it possible to capture everything from FCP onto my FW drive and then use the media on a PC based editing program?

    No experience with the Lacie…

    But…

Never capture on one edit system for use on another. This never works properly. Each edit system is different and captured media in it’s own way…especially Mac and PC systems. Generally Macs capture as .mov, PCs as .avi.

No. Capture on the same edit platform that you are editing in.

    Shane,

Just for the record (since your picture is up top and we now know what you look like), almost every PC based NLE can import QT movies.

This is true, but I agree with Shane, don’t capture via FCP and then try to edit with a PC based edit system. You’re just asking for problems. Better to capture / edit on one platform.

I have two LaCie Big Disk Extremes 500gb, the Bigger Disk Extreme 1TB, and the Bigger Disk Extreme 2TB. My experience is good on average but extremely inconsistent. Between the four drives I mentioned every single one has a different amount of noise, ranging from whisper quiet to jet-engine loud. Some even make grinding or beeping sounds, and I would swear that they were about to die any second, if not for the fact that they have worked perfectly like this for over a year.

Speed is also inconsistent. Using FW 800 I get the best results and have less than 1 dropped frame on average every 5 hours (of constant digitizing) across the board. Using USB2 and FW 400 however I again have mixed results; sometimes flawless, sometimes unacceptable.

I can’t think of any hard drives that work better, however, I think QC is an issue with LaCie, and you might have to open up two or three boxes to find a “perfect” one.

G-Raid drvives seems to be the most reliable drives if you wanna go FW.

And FCP can import AVIs. But work with them, that is another story. Not as well as if you captured with FCP itself. FCP doesn’t even like it when you use iMovie to capture…and they are both make by the same company.

Stick to capturing with the NLE you will be editing with.

You and Walter are such worry-warts. I think you’ve both been working on MAC exclusively for way too long. Get out in the world once in while., There’s a whole wide world of exchangable media out there.

I have 2 – 1TB lacie drives and 2 500 gb drives. One of the TB drives just died on me and I lost about 1/2 of the info on it. Just yesterday one of the 500 crapped out on me. Do yourself a favor and go with the OWC (otherworldcomputing) drives. They have great enclosures and good cooling. I think the trouble with the lacie drives is the lack of cooling.

I’ve never had a bad drive in over 20 years. I’ve had drives that seemed a bit tired and I had time to back them up but these drives gave absolutely no warning. STAY AWAY

David, you can work with whatever workflow you would like to use. Personally, I go for the most reliable workflow I can use, which generally includes capturing to the same NLE that I will be working with. I don’t call that being a worry-wart, I call that never missing a deadline.

That’s far more important to me than recommending that someone “get out once in a while.”

Lacie is unreliable! We’ve lost 2 Big Disk Extreme whatevers…. G-Raid has been good to us – zero problems in the last 12 months of heavy use.
