ProAnimator was a great choice for the kind of project you’re describing!

Good luck and let us know if we can help.

    Hi AngeyM,

The transparency map can be a tga. Simply double click on the thumbnail square next to the transparency slider and use the pop-up navigator to find the image you want to use as your transparency map. It works on black, white and grayscale values. You don’t need to adjust the transparency slider.

Be sure the material to which you’ve added the transparency map is then applied to your object.

You can also use a layermap as a transparency map to animate the transparency and get some really cool effects.

    Does this helps?

    Hi Josh,

You have two cameras in there — not sure why. If I get a chance, I’ll work up a PA version of my reflection project to see if that helps.

    Hi Lajko1,

Like any 3D app, ProAnimator has both strengths and limitations. It’s very, very good at easily controling complex motion for large numbers of objects. At the same time, it’s not trying to be another Lightwave or Maya or Max. Character animation is not its intended use, so its modeling and animation features aren’t oriented that way. Even so, I’d like to see parenting, deformation and object linkage options in either PA or Invigorator… if enough users want a feature, you can bet Zax and his team will do their best to add it.

As for your bowling alley project, forget about using imported pins. You can make a bowling pin quite simply, using a custom bevel. And because you’re creating an edge profile, you can place the stripe around the neck, exactly where you want it.

Creating a bowling lane is equally simple, using a primative plane. or adding depth to a cross-section of the lane including gutters. And you can precisely control how your wood texture is applied to the object. There are some simple rules, but it works every time. Read your docs on materials and how they’re applied to front and rear faces versus how they’re applied to edges. That should clear things up very quickly.

If you need help getting started, let us know.

    Hi Lajko1,

You can make the two objects one in the 3D ap where they were made. The disadvantage to that is that you can apply just one material to one imported object and can’t split edges as you can with native objects.

However, having it in parts gives you more texturing options.

    Josh,

When you tell ProAnimator to use the comp camera, it works when that camera is the active view. When you’re using another view, you won’t see the movement you may expect.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Josh,

The example was done in Invigorator, but ProAnimator can work too, so long as you abide by the basic rules about animated objects from each copy of the effect not crossing the eachother.

If you want, send me your project file and I can take a look at it.

Kurt’s suggestion is a good one. Another way to scale objects is with the stats pop-up box.

January 25, 2007 at 1:45 pm in reply to: Spiked out AI file and unreadable CS2 file

    Hi Paul,

First some clarification based on the emails you sent me:

When you use Invigorator, you don’t “apply” Invigorator to the Illustrator file in AE.

Create a comp-sized solid and apply Invigorator to that. When you launch Invigorator from the effects control panel, choose “open Illustrator file” be sure to leave “move objects to center” This should make your art show up in the center of the preview window, as well as in the center of AE’s window.

    Does this help?

    Paul,

I sent back a couple of files.. including a legacy Illustrator 8 verison (use the export command from CS to do this.)

I also changed your artwork to filled solids and eliminated the strokes… you don’t need them.

The clipping mask on at least one of your files was also not needed.

Let me know if the files work… good luck.
