October 1, 2012 at 10:21 pm in reply to: How do you import a finished DVD project back into the timeline?Luckily, I already have Streamclip. I didn’t realize it could do that. Yes, I haven’t been able to keep a lot of my files in any form in recent times. Things are changing for me now. But I seem to be experiencing a monthly hard drive bill these day’s – much like gasoline.
“So do I just mount the dmg file of my choice – then drag it into Quicktime/422 slot?
Thanks Dave….

Well Rafael… I ran DiskWarrior Version 4.3. It took a looooong time for the disc to boot up, and I finally clicked on the rebuild and did other repairs too, but only repairs to that one external drive.
Everything seems to have gone well, except for one issue. I had (4) FCP Projects stored on that disc, and they all seem to open and work fine now, except for one. That project was the last project I created, and was the one presently working on. Now when I try to open that project by clicking on that FCP Project icon – I get a message that says…! Unable to open project file.
(And that’s all it says. It doesn’t say why or what.)
Even if I go to the backup drive where I copied everything, it still says the same thing.I don’t know it this has anything to do with it, but some of the video files associated with that project file, are nested in multiple folders. Some of this footage was shot with a Nikon DSLR, and imported it from the camera – using the Nikon Software. I then copied that folder to the external. Inside that folder was another folder with the AVI files. I then converted all those into ProRes – in yet another folder. I did read in the DiscWarrior report that “multiple nested folders” could be a problem. Could this be why the project won’t open? Or is it something else. I can see all the video files with the get info command, so I know all the video files are there and work.
It’s just the project file itself won’t mount up with the sequence I was working on. Any ideas? Thanks much for anymore input…

Rafael……I did run Disk Utilities, and it said it could not repair. I’m running OS 10.6.3, and I only have Diskwarrior 4.1 ….but I’m not sure if that version will work with 10.6.3. I certainly don’t want to scatter files all over the place with an older version of DW. I have that drive backed up anyway, and I guess I will reformat it and re-copy all the FCP files. I know it will take a long time to do over a TB – as opposed to running DW….but I need to go ahead and start.
Thanks!

Hi Phil….I’m not sure if Wondershare converts to pro res….will check that here in a minute. But I just solved the original problem.
Final Cut Pro 6.0.6 will handle .XMF files after the Plug-In is installed – and then you go to “LOG and TRANSFER.” I was trying to use the import Folder/File, and even went so far as log and capture. Wrong. I have never used log and transfer option.
So, I’m transferring .XMF files from an external – directly into FCP 6 with no problem. But I take it the other issue will be the necessity to convert these files to pro-res at some point. I usually use Stream Clip.
So to recap, there is a Plug-In at the Canon site for .MXF files for 6.0.6
Thanks for everybody’s help!

Update to 7? Well….I could. But I’m in a debate with myself about that. Either 7, or FCP X, or jump ship to Premier. I dunno yet. I just need to get these files readable to complete this job. But 7 would certainly solve the issue. Either that or Wondershare Converter. Thanks for the input.

Well, thanks Shane…it may not make any difference, but this is not from a C300, but a XF 300. I actually called Canon USA and spoke to “April” and she directed me to the link for the plug-in I needed for FCP 6 concerning this camera format. I was simply acting on what I was told by Canon.
But, alas, they don’t always know what their talking about when it come to software versions, etc.
I have found a converter called Wondershare that seems to convert the files as needed. It does put a watermark on the footage until you purchase. But I have read other posts that seem to indicate the plug-in is all I need to do this. Maybe it does work on v7 only….Looks I may be SOL – unless I get the converter.

Good point Kevin. Hadn’t thought about that.
One thought that has occurred to me; Is there going to be any problem leaving an iPhone 4 in the “on” position, lets say, for 8 to 12 hours a day? There is no way (as far as I know), to make the screen go black during use – other than maybe setting the brightness to the lowest. Didn’t know if there would be an eventual build-up of heat that might cause a problem in saving the file. Would hate to go through all this and lose it because of a glitch…. Any thoughts?
Thanks again…

Wow Angelo! I don’t know what the heck I was thinking, but my brain was way off on this figure. But this make perfect math sense.
Anyway, I plan on shooting this with an iPhone 4 and going to suction-cup the phone inside a nearby local business’s window. I downloaded a FREE Time Lapse AP call “Motion Pics.” I’ve tested it on a short run, and it seems to work as described.
Let cha-ya know how it turns out in Sept….
Thanks a lot!
