    Markus,

Do you have a budget in mind. Are you just buying the camera and lens or do you need batteries, a tripod and head, camera case, etc?

Give me a ballpark and I’m give you my two cents.

    Thanks

October 24, 2009 at 1:48 am in reply to: Would you buy your GY-HM700 again?

    Lou,

I would buy this camera again. I really like the image, the form factor, the workflow and the price of the media. There are a few things I miss like interval recording, the ability to record in 4:3 and SD and a 1/2″ CCD would be nice. I looked long and hard at the Panasonic HPX 300 and the Sony EX3 but felt the JVC was the best bang for the buck. While each camera has it strengths and weaknesses, I have not regretted my choice.
Feel free to contact me if you have specific questions.
Now back to all the shooting and editing that is keeping everyone else away.

    Thanks

Is it a class 6 card? The camera requires class 6 or higher.

    Dan,

They released a firmware update for the 700 that allows you to record in .mp4 format without the SxS recorder. The lawyers between JVC and Sony must have decided to get along.

    Hey guys,
Great discussion on the 700. I’ve been using one for 4 months now and love it. I switched from tape and so far haven’t missed it one bit. The image quality is great, the form factor is nice and the workflow has been a real plus. I’ve probably run over 1 TB of video through my SDHC cards.

I’ve not run into the camera stopping recording after a long period of time. I know I’ve recorded several sessions that were 1.5 hours long with no problems. I know some guys have had trouble with different SDHC cards. Apparently not all class 6 cards are the same. I’ve been using SanDisk and Transcend with no problems. I even did one shoot in over 100 degree heat in the direct Dallas sun with the rain slick on to keep the dust out. The camera was so hot I could barely touch it but it kept recording all day long. (The photographer’s camera quit due to the heat.)

As far as work flow goes, I just drag the files onto my hard drive and then directly into FCP. No log and capture needed for what I do, so it is great.

I did some testing and the 1280×720 60p at the Highest Quality looks much better than the 1080i formats. So I’ve switched to using this progressive format with great results. I’ve not needed to use any of the ProRes formats. The 1280×720 60p edits fine in FCP. The render times are normal and so are the exports. I’ve also edited on an older Mac Book Pro without any trouble.

There are a few things I would like to have (interval recording, 1/2″ CCD, another ND filter), but bang for the buck it is a great tool.

August 3, 2009 at 6:29 pm in reply to: Matte Box for GY-HM700

    Charlie,

I just shot someone welding in a machine shop with the JVC HM-GY700. I kept my distance and used a tripod/Fuji 17x lens to get the tighter shots. I have a Formatt FOCUV82 82mm Ultraviolet Clear Hi Def Glass Filter in front of the lens. I tried to shoot through plexiglass before and had trouble with reflections. I was a the top of an observation tower enclosed by plexiglass so I wasn’t the cleanest.

Let me know if you find something that works well.

    Thanks

August 3, 2009 at 6:12 pm in reply to: SxS or SDHC on the HM700?

    Brian,

I’ve been using the SDHC cards and probably recorded 50 hours of footage since I bought the camera. So far I have had no trouble. I think the advantage of the SxS cards is durability. They are built much tougher and would probably hold up better in temperature extremes. I think for normal use the SDHC cards will be just fine. For the price difference it didn’t make sense for me to buy the SxS cards.

I’ve also shot variable frame rate footage and had great success. The 60/30 fps slow motion is really smooth and I love using it.

I have heard of some people recording to SDHC and SxS at the same time so they have two copies. (one for the client, producer, etc).

The JVC tripod plate does have several 1/4″-20 holes (5 to be exact).
It also 6 six larger holes (maybe 1/2″).

I’m using the Anton Bauer Dionic 90 batteries. They work great. Not sure about the 160’s but I would agree with you that they should work fine.

    Thanks

July 24, 2009 at 3:16 am in reply to: Help! QuickTime won’t play my JVC700 clips

    Anthony,

If you have Quicktime and FCP installed on your Mac you should be able to play these clips without any other software. You don’t even need to drag them to a hard drive. You can mount your SDHC card via a card reader and play them right off the card in QT or FCP.

A couple more ?’s to maybe find the problem:
    – Do you have class 6 SDHC cards?
    – Did you find the Clip folder on the card and drag that to the Hard Drive?
    – Are you recording in .Mov or do you happen to have the SxS adapter and recording in .mp4?

    – Will the files play back in your camera fine? If they do, I would try it on another Mac with FCP and see if that works. Then you can determine if the problem is with the footage/camera or the computer/software.

If it helps, I can give you a dropbox location and you can send me a short test clip and I can see if it works on my system.

    Thanks

July 8, 2009 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Ready to accessorize my JVC700. Suggestions?

    Charlie,
You are right about the normal FCP process. Record to the card on the 700. Take it out and put it in your card reader and either edit directly from the card or drag it to a hard drive. The only time your should need to reformat is when the card is full and you want to clean it off to reuse it.
A couple ?’s for you to consider:
    – Is your card a class 6 SDHC card?
    – What brand of card are you using?
    – are you hitting pause before you take the card out (red light should be off before ejecting the card).

These are the only things can think of that would cause the problems you are having.

I have used Sandisk (expensive) and Transcend (inexpensive) SDHC class 6 cards with no problems.

    Hope this helps,
    Jon
