Image Lounge by Red Giant Software has this plugin. It is exactly what you need. You could achieve the effect without the plugin, but it would take lots of tweaking and extra layers and you still may never get it to look natural. I used the effect in my Texture Packs promo video (about 30 seconds in) seen here:

Instead of a block cursor, I opted for the line, however block was an option. There are many options to tweak the plugin, such as having the cursor be on the last letter, or after it, and how fast it blinks… and about 20 more. Too many to remember.

The compression software is by MainConcept, which is ok, but not as good as Procoder, TmpgEnc, Squeeze, or just about any other standalone encoder. Don’t let it do any scaling (such as HD -> SD) or it will look very bad (text gets very pixelated, looks extremely low res). If you just do a straight encode, without changing any resolution, cropping, etc, it looks decent.

I’ve used both and in my opinion Encore is easier to use. It just seems to have a more logical layout/workflow. Both are powerful programs and have there own benefits and drawbacks. Photoshop integration is SO much better in encore. Also, Blu-ray/Flash export is a nice bonus. Encore does seem to be in early stages of development, not nearly as polished & stable as a program like photoshop, however if you are aware of what causes the occasional error messages, there is almost always a way to get around the problems. Squeeze mpeg files should work without a problem. Since Adobe is constantly fixing and working on the bugs, you should try and get the newest version possible. So I would recommend it. In fact, I design After Effects menu templates for use in Encore and DVDSP. My website is still under development (almost done), but you can see what encore/after effects is capable of doing if you look at the ‘Butterfly Bliss’ Menu on my site.

  • I recommend bringing the HD file directly into After Effects, and using scale to make it the same size as the SD video background. So import it, drag it into your composition right above the old video background layer, hit ‘s’ to bring up scale, scale it down to around 45%. Then copy over any effects you had applied to the old background video, and delete the old one. After Effects does a good job of scaling, I wouldn’t recommend allowing any other program to do it. You could then Render out as Quicktime Movie, maybe Animation codec (file size might be large, but its pretty close to lossless), then let DVDSP encode to mpeg2.

Why will it take you a month to find out if it works or not? If you have the 30GB mpeg2 file, and you have encore, then import it and test it out. Besides, you might find someone that has successfully put (10) 3GB mpeg2 videos in a single dvd folder, but a single 30GB file might have problems unique to its large file size. It shouldn’t take too long for you to test it out, assuming you have the file and the encore software. Once you do test it out, it might be helpful to others if you report back your findings.

You should definitely consider a system with the Intel Core i7 Processor. I currently have an Intel Quad Core (Q6600) @ 3.2 Ghz w/ 4GB of ram, and the cheapest Core i7 Processor renders AE projects in HALF the time as my system does based on benchmarks.

    Here is the solution:

When you apply a layer style it will ignore z-space information! You must apply the ‘Effect>Perspective>Drop Shadow’ for it to function correctly.

I have not tried what you want to do myself, but I know you can set a custom disc size in the burn settings. This might be required to achieve what you want. If it were a blu-ray project, you would not be able to set a custom size, however, you have up to 50GB of disc space to work with, and can use DVD-mpeg2 files without having to re-encode them. If you are unable to get a 30GB DVD folder working, you might want to try a Blu-ray folder if your dvd software and monitor support blu-ray.

Make sure you are not using Open-GL accelerated previews. Use adaptive. Also, preview at least one frame at full res (you don’t need to ram preview, just set the comp preview quality to full). This should allow you to see exactly what it will look like when you export. Also make sure your export settings are not configured for draft mode or anything.

It sounds like an issue with 3D space and the layers overlapping. This can happen when the layers are too close together. separate the background image from the text layer more, and/or make sure both layers have the same motion blur setting (either both on or both off). If you want the background motion blurred but the text always crisp (no motion blur), you are going to have to put a lot of distance between them (not sure how your comp is setup, but usually the z-axis)
