As I stated, I want to output SD-SDI – I looked at the manual first of course… what I didn’t explicitly get out of it is that the down-convert only activates when you’re recording in an interlaced format. So if I’m recording at 1080i, down-convert is possible for the SDI-Output – no luck with a progressive format like 720p.
So that’s what I did, set my cameras to 1080i instead of 720p: voila! 576i over SDI and HD on my P2 cards! 🙂

I think I have found my error, and it’s right there in the “Basic Setup” FAQ by Apple, on how to do this kind of arrangement:
