Record in HD while outputting SD-SDI?
I’m working with a HPX171E – I’m sure this is possible, but I just can’t seem to find the right settings.
Our BNC cables can’t reliably transmit HD-SDI (I know… they’ll be replaced soon) and so I want to send an SD-SDI signal while still recording in 720p on my P2 cards.
How can I activate the downconvert for the SD-SDI while I’m recording HD?

Page 107 of the manual will show you the Down-Convert options.
Switches down-conversion output mode.
SIDE CROP: Crops the right and left edges of the images with the 4:3 aspect ratio.
LETTER BOX: Adds black bands at the top and bottom of the images, and the images with the 16:9 aspect ratio are displayed in the 4:3 aspect ratio.
SQUEEZE: Select this option for 16:9 aspect ratio images. When viewed on a 4:3 aspect ratio monitor, images are squeezed horizontally.Your shooting 720p and you want to output 720p? This is not a down convert.

As I stated, I want to output SD-SDI – I looked at the manual first of course… what I didn’t explicitly get out of it is that the down-convert only activates when you’re recording in an interlaced format. So if I’m recording at 1080i, down-convert is possible for the SDI-Output – no luck with a progressive format like 720p.
So that’s what I did, set my cameras to 1080i instead of 720p: voila! 576i over SDI and HD on my P2 cards! 🙂Student of audio- & video-engineering at the IMM Düsseldorf in Germany.
