October 4, 2014 at 6:14 am in reply to: OWC RAID 5 not being seen by the Media Browswer

Same exact issue here. I migrated some project files and media to the OWC Qx2, but when I opened Premiere to relink, I could see the drive but not direct any media to it. I too originally formatted the drive using OWC’s software.

Now I have to spend the evening migrating the files back to another drive so I can reformat with Disk Utility. Hope OWC can fix the issue soon!

March 27, 2014 at 9:46 am in reply to: Black Magic Intensity Shuttle – no video

    Hi Dustin,

Know that composite will not output at 720P. Only Component and HDMI can. It is odd that you’re getting audio and not video. Is your audio running through HDMI or RCA?

    I have three guesses.

Firstly, make sure the device is set to see the input from the HDMI source, not the component or composite source.

On a Mac, go to your system preferences, and at the bottom under “Other” select “Blackmagic Design”. There should be an option to “Select Input.” Make sure it is on your desired input.

Secondly, check the settings of Media Express to make sure they match your output. On a mac, go to “Media Express/Preferences/”. Select a 720P option, and play around with the framerate.

Lastly, it is quite possible that the Wii U is outputting with HDCP (high-definition copyright protection). Blackmagic products honor HDCP and therefore won’t display the image.

November 17, 2013 at 6:09 am in reply to: 29.97 Output from Premiere

Hi Bret and Sara (nice to speak with you again). Thanks for your replies. Sorry for being late to get back to you. I’ve been traveling and didn’t want to respond until I got to test your new steps out.

Sara, this time the process you described worked. I finally got a working 29.97 output from Premiere.

In answer to your question, I use both Premiere CC and 6 depending on the client.

One of the problems I noticed was that when I re-copied the DeckLinkDevice.bundle file over, for some reason, the file became corrupted. For example, it said it was created back in 1984. I finally managed a successful transfer over.

Thank you for taking the time again to respond. However, although this process did work, I would ask that Blackmagic please try to resolve this issue. It make it extremely tedious as a user trying to navigate two programs (CC and 6) to reinstall the drivers manually every time there is a new Driver release. Though I am sure there are reasons for the way it is laid out now, maybe it would be possible, for example, to install all of the intensity presets in the IntensityPresets.zip instead of trying to merge it with the Decklink Presets? So please pass this on through tech support.

    Thanks again for responding.

    Hey Jared,

    Sorry for not responding sooner.

The problem in your case is not the TV, but the cables. Component cables are only capable of doing up to 1080i at 59.97. They are not able to support progressive 1080 outputs.

The only progressive HD signals you can send through them are at 720P. You will need an HDMI (or HD-SDI) to get a 24FPS signal.

  • Like everyone says, it all depends on what you do.

At my work place, we are still on FCP 7 and working through the advantages and disadvantages of Premiere and Avid.

For myself, I find that Avid is a great application if you have one project and plan to stick with it for a long time (i.e. editing a feature film).

I also find that Premiere functions more like Final Cut in terms of how it stores footage and reads it. It is better in my opinion for people who are working on multiple projects per day and are constantly moving back and forth between them.

Premiere is also more affordable (especially with the new creative cloud option), and comes with a all-in-one suite style application like Final Cut Studio.

On the other hand again, Avid is a solid application and is incredibly popular. I love working with both.

Are you using the Intensity Pro? I have the Intensity Extreme for my iMac, which I assume would have similar drivers.

You cannot show PSF on the Extreme. However, there is a “Select output processing” option under the BMD Settings panel on a Mac where you can select “HD to SD Letterbox” or “HD to SD Anamorphic”. This should automatically take care of the downconversion for you. If you are running CS on a PC, I am not sure where those options would be, but I assume they are there.

There also is a “Set default video standard” option where you can select PAL. However, I do not believe that the Intensity will automatically set that as the option when you open Premiere. This is more for their Media Express software. You need to set your Premiere sequence settings to whatever your desired output is.

Why are you sticking with an SD monitor? My recommendation would be to save some money for a higher end HDMI broadcast monitor. Or even a high end consumer monitor to edit with, and then preview SD on your old monitor when your project is finished.

March 2, 2013 at 9:07 pm in reply to: Blackmagic FCP Audio Problem

Are you using FCP 7 or X? Which Blackmagic device are you using? Decklink?

Also, how are you speakers hooked up? Do you have an amplifier or some sort of mini-mixer hooked up to your Blackmagic first and THEN going to your speakers, or are you plugging your speakers in directly to your speakers from your IO device?

If you are plugging in directly, you really need a mixer to act as a buffer between yourself and the speakers. This is where you’ll control your audio levels. Behringer makes some really cheap mixers for as low as $45.00 on Amazon.

    Neil,

You may very well be right about Avid and AJA. I’ve only used Kona’s with Final Cut Pro. We’re still on FCP at work and I used MC6.5 for side projects on my personal workstation. I’ll research is though. I still wonder if Avid would override the output on the “Secondary display” setting in the AJA Control Panel. It would be nice if the BMD had this option, but you get what you get for $300.

UPDATE: I ended up purchasing a new TV (plasma Panasonic) that takes true 24P in, and everything works like a charm now with Avid. I’m still having major issues with Premiere and CS6, but I will post in another thread for those.

    Hey Neil,

Thanks for your reply. I agree it is my client monitor. With my experience with AJA though, what I am referring to is the ability of the box itself to do output conversions for you so that if I want to work with a 1080 project in Avid, under the AJA control panel, I could set the output to 720P and it would display. With BlackMagic, it only seems to output whatever your project/sequence is set as.

Am I misunderstanding this part of AJA’s control panel? I have experience with Kona cards, but primarily with Final Cut Pro 7 which has the Video Output menu inside of the program.

    UPDATE:

My test project to try this out was one of my first Avid projects from a year ago and was set to 24FPS. Therefore, I only had the option of switching between 1080P and NTSC. I found that NTSC would pass the signal through, but obviously it looked pretty bad.

With a new project I created at 1080P 23.98, the TV still won’t display at 1080P, but now a 720P option is available and it will display if I change the format of the project to 720P 23.98. Though not ideal for me, this is bearable for when I have a client in the room for now.

But now I can’t get anything to work at all with Premiere Pro 6. Any help on that front would be appreciated. I know it only supports standard resolutions, and I have tried 720P at 59.94, but nothing will pass through the Intensity Extreme Box. Any help on that front would now be appreciated.

Saving up for an AJA IO XT…
