  • OWC RAID 5 not being seen by the Media Browswer

I’ve reported this problem in the official Adobe forums but I wanted to post it here too.

I have a 16TB OWC Mercury Elite Pro Qx2 external RAID 5 connected via eSATA to a 2009 Mac Pro (CalDigit FASTA-6GU3 eSATA/USB 3 card) and PPro’s Media Browser does not see the drive. If I use the File->Import command though I can see the OWC RAID and import media. I can even use the “reveal in Finder” command and it will properly reveal the media in Finder on the OWC RAID.

Once in PPro if I select media imported from the OWC RAID, make the media offline and then try to relink the media PPro will not be able to relink it even though the correct file path is displayed in the file path column of the relinking window. I assume the Media Browser and the relinking utility use the same framework (for lack of a better term).

FCP7, Avid MC 6.5 and After Effects CC2014 interface with the OWC RAID just fine (as does the File->Import command in PPro) so I feel like the problem resides in how PPro reads/finds volumes internally.

I’ve seen this same problem posted in the Adobe community forums multiple times since 2013. The work around has been to reformat the RAID using Disk Utility but I’m running in RAID 5 and Disk Utility does not support RAID 5.

    Hi Andrew,
I was just researching this issue. It’s something we are aware of and working on a fix. If you have time, please report your findings in a bug report which will help immensely: https://adobe.ly/ReportBug

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Did a bug report, posted here and at Adobe’s Forums as well as emailed OWC. I covered all my troubleshooting bases!

OWC suggested purchasing SoftRAID and using that to format the RAID instead of OWC’s own software. Do you know of any bugs related to using SoftRAID and PPro, Kevin?

Currently, there are no known issues with SoftRAID. Let us know how it works for you.

So it turns out the answer was in front of me all along, just use Disk Utility to format the drive and all is well.

What threw me was that Disk Utility only does RAID 1 and RAID 0 but since the OWC Mercury Elite Pro Qx2 is a hardware RAID I just set the RAID mode using the switch on the enclosure and then use Disk Utility to format it like I would any other disk.

The simplicity of the solution coupled with my lack of experience with RAID boxes proved to be my undoing. haha.

With that being said, I’d still like to see if Adobe can fix the issue w/the default OWC formatting tool.

Andrew and Kevin, I ran in to this same issue today… Contacted OWC (they are apparently unaware of the issue) and searched the Adobe forums but didn’t find anything useful there. Fortunately I found this post. Unfortunately, I don’t have a spare to back up to in order to reformat my drive. I should have one soon and will post back if the solution works for me as well.

In the meantime, I wonder if there are any ramifications of reconnecting media not using the media browser and using the finder interface? I am working with C300, P2, and F5 material, so I always use the Media Browser to import footage.

Same exact issue here. I migrated some project files and media to the OWC Qx2, but when I opened Premiere to relink, I could see the drive but not direct any media to it. I too originally formatted the drive using OWC’s software.

Now I have to spend the evening migrating the files back to another drive so I can reformat with Disk Utility. Hope OWC can fix the issue soon!

I backed up and reformatted with Disk Utility and everything was back to normal. It should work for you as well, as I now have 4 of these drives up and working properly with Premiere after being formatted with Disk Utility. OWC points to Adobe, but if they work after being formatted with Disk Utility then I think the issue is with their formatting utility.

It’s not just a RAID 5 problem. I just purchased an OWC Guardian Maximus with a RAID 1 configuration (2 – 2TB drives). I also have an OWC RAID 5 box also, which *IS* seen by Premiere, but I think I reformatted that with Apple’s DIsk Utility when I bought it. And yes, I can see all the files in the finder but cannot see them in the media browser.

I am using an late model (2013) iMac i7 with 16 GBs of RAM. All the other drives I have attached work fine. The new drive is not seen regardless of whether I use eSata or USB 3.0.

When I copied my files over (I spent hours doing this!) and find that Pr CC 2014 will not see the drive! I then come to COW and find out it’s a known problem.

I just got off the phone with OWC tech support and they feel that since all my other OWC drives are working fine with this, that it must be a partition problem, and that they recommend reformatting.

I’m going to contact Adobe too on this tonight.

    Al
