September 5, 2019 at 9:18 am in reply to: what is the name of this style of animation

Yes, it’s traditionally know as ‘cut out’ animation based on the fact that originally it was made using cut-out paper and card, hinged together with string and wires to allow stop frame animation.

While this was originally done under a camera and often with pieces placed on glass to create depth, nearly every version of that style is recreated in After Effects due to it’s layering system. Often the best way of recreating that look theses days is combining scanned or photographed 2D elements and then lighting and animating them in After Effects.

There’s an image from ‘The South Bank Show’ I worked on several years ago using the style at this link:

An here’s a section from a musical film that uses similar technique:

August 29, 2019 at 8:38 am in reply to: Question Regarding Rendering Dynamic Link (Pr/Ae)

Hi there. I’m guessing you are not on a super very powerful machine?

Eitherway, there’s always a workflow that can help, it’s just a matter of finding it.

1.) In After Effects, if you happen to be using the Roto Brush, then you are absolutely going to have play back issues. If this is the case you will need to ‘Freeze’ the roto brush before you continue compositing in AE and going back to Premiere.

2.) As 4K clips are going to push your machine to the max, i’d usually recommend making Proxy files in Premiere quite early in the process. When you Send to After Effects, Premiere sends both the original and the proxy files to the AE project and then in AE you can switch back and forth. Obviously the proxies will perform much faster and you’ll only need to use the originals for your final renders.

3.) In Premiere, rather than Rendering the timeline and the Dynamically linked clips, you should ‘Render and Replace’. This will make you higher quality rendered files and you’re editing should be real-time. Then if you need to go back to AE to make some tweaks in your Comp you can fo that quickly. When you need to see those tweaks again in the Premiere timeline you can selected the Rendered clip and select ‘Restore Unrendered’ this will relink the Dynamically linked clip and you’ll see your changes on the timeline. (Again this will need to be ‘Render and Replaced’ if your machine has problems playing it back in realtime.)

    Hope those suggestions help.

Let me know if you need any more clarity;)

  • Looks like you need to adjust your projection method.

Not totally sure why you have a pixelated edge on the green band?

If you’re happy to send the file I can take a look.

August 13, 2019 at 1:42 pm in reply to: Get texture from image

Hi there, you certainly wouldn’t want to recreate that texture as it’s quite complex so your quickest option would probably to do some projection mapping onto your model.

The model looks quite simple to recreate, in fact it looks like you only need one arch and the other two can be copies. Then if your texture is high enough resolution (i expect the purchased version will be) then you can project the texture onto the model.

August 13, 2019 at 8:39 am in reply to: Moving a project from Mac to PC

This seems strange as PremPro on a Mac to PC and visa versa is often a straight forward process with only Render Files usually being lost.

If you provide a few more details that will help, ie; type of video and audio files, Mac O.S., have you done any transcoding or proxies?

To identify if it’s purely a Mac to PC issue could you try going from one Mac to another Mac to identify if it’s a project structure issue.

If you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to run tests then Project Manage your timeline and Collect all files and copy to a new location.

    Best, John W.

August 9, 2019 at 10:16 am in reply to: Better performance without GPU acceleration.

Have you tried a different codec for your proxies, Cineform has a few issues at times on a PC.

    Adobe notes:

Smart rendering is supported for the GoPro CineForm codec on Mac OS X. However, on Windows a few limitations exist.

On Windows, because QuickTime is not available as a preview file format, GoPro CineForm cannot be used as a video preview codec for smart rendering. Smart rendering GoPro CineForm is possible on Windows only when the frames don’t require rendering.

August 9, 2019 at 10:06 am in reply to: Why is my ai vector importing like this?

Looks like your paths aren’t clean in Illustrator as they all join to the 0,0 point.

As previously mentioned, if you sent the Ai file we can take a look and even if you’ve resolved it, someone else may have a similar issue it could be helpful to clarify.

  • Yes! In After Effects you can create the same effect using ‘Turbulent Displacement.’
Apply this to the layer and then all you need to do is animated the .Evolution. amount in the Effects Controls.

In summary: For long takes, like events, presentations and performances, using a sync point or markers from something like a clapperboard will always be faster. If you have loads of media to sync which has not clear sync point then try out the Red Giant Plug-in:
