It would not be hard at all if BMD allowed all commands and GUI options to be user-hotkey mappable. Big wishlist item for me as I use hotkeys a lot (even with the Resolve panels).

For anyone that’s thinking that Resolve’s lag isn’t so bad… I highly encourage you to check out a demo of Scratch. There’s no noticeable delay between moves on the panel and feedback in the monitor, though of course there’s the standard SDI delay, but about 10 seconds less of it than Resolve.

I’m with Sasha on this 100%. This is something that BMD really need to improve, IMHO.

You can’t have more bits than your original acquisition format. Since you are capturing in an 8bit format (h.264 from DSLR), th extra 2 bits in DNxHD, Cineform, DPX, etc… are wasted. Resolve grades in a full floating point space, so once you bring an 8 bit file into Resolve, for instance, any operations you do are in floating point, rather than integer space.

That said, h.264 is a crap file format for post. Period. It’s long GOP, not frame accurate, doesn’t have real timecode, etc…, so converting to something else (DNxHD mxf or QT if you’re working Avid) and giving it some jammed timecode would be my choice of workflow.

DNxHD is part of the Avid installation, depending on what version you’re running (i.e. how up-to-date, not MC vs. Symphony).

October 7, 2012 at 7:59 pm in reply to: 9.01 – render cache doesn’t do anything

Render cache, despite it’s potential usefulness (tho I’ve never used it and been using Resolve since v5), would not be my choice of workflow for 5D h.264. Might try putting those clips on a separate track and doing a source mode render to something more appropriate for grading (DPX, Prores, DNxHD, whatever).

THX / Cinespace doesn’t make bespoke LUTs, they develop and sell the software to do it, though.

I can make you LUTs for a fee (I use Cinespace). Contact me at john (at) postcollectivemedia (dot) com

  • You’re making this extra complicated, and I’m not sure why.

First, why are you using Redcine if you’re finishing in Resolve? Try 1/4 debayer for the grading session, then bump the project to 1/2 prem or full for final render. yes it’ll render slow, but so will Redcine X.

Next, if you’re dead set on transcodes, you can conform in Resolve and kick out the transcodes there, too.

5D stuff may or may not conform well. I’ve not usually had problems, but lack of real timecode can be an issue. Also, grading h.264 in Resolve can be a bit clunky. I would do prores 1080p transcodes of all the 5D prior to grading. Put all your conformed 5D clips on a separate layer, turn off the non-5D layers, render that layer in source mode to file format of your choice, then reconform from that folder and you’re ready to grade 5D from prores which will go smoother.

It sounds like you don’t have much experience with this kind of workflow… I would suggest hiring someone with experience to help you get started as it’s very easy to make small mistakes that add up to huge time wasters on projects like this.

September 8, 2012 at 9:09 pm in reply to: CS6 export r3d at lower debayer?

PNY Quadro FX 5800. It’s not technically an approved card, but haven’t had these issues until 6.02 update.

EDIT: just saw that it is supported in the cuda text file. I think I have an idea of what’s going on – switched to geforce driver to test an issue I was having in Resolve v9, will switch back to quadro driver and report back.

Just noticed if I turn off GPU acceleration the 1hr 44min render time drops to 25 minutes. That’s some strange acceleration indeed. Max quality always turned off, btw.

  • I’ve been having the same problem, but muting doesn’t seem to solve the issue. While playback in media & conform are realtime, playing back at any resolution in color is always below 24fps.

    thanks,

  • While it’s not a supported config – this motherboard is a workstation predecessor to the currently recommended p9x79 and the graphics card is 1 generation behind the top of the line Nvidia Quadro 6000), I’m not sure that’s a reason to dismiss the issue.

The performance difference between v8.2.2 and v9b2 is what is striking, and that in v9b2 the r3d files play back locked to 24fps in both media and conform tabs, but not in color. It’s a bit odd IMHO.

I also checked other formats like DNxHD 220 10bit, which plays back just fine locked to 24fps, so while I do think my GPU could stand to be updated, I don’t think it is the issue in this particular case.
