Here’s my reasoning behind making dubs…
1. This project is going to take a year or more, and I need to use the drives for other projects as well. It costs me about $300.00 to rent a 1200 deck, but only on the weekends when it is available. I figured that I could make quick dubs of all the material so I can spend the time I need logging, digitizing, etc. on my own terms, not on the possible availability of this deck.
2. When I”m done screening and logging, the footage. I”m going to need to possibly back up the project and wipe the drives so I can work on other projects. If I”ve got DV working tapes, I can reinstate the project whenever I want and I’m not going to be tying up a ton of drive space for such a long time.
3. If I just go straight from the 1200 to FCPRO, and I have a drive crash or file getting corrupted, I”ll have to re-digitize the camera masters and I don’t want to mess with the masters if I can help it.
3a. If I digitize directly from the 1200 deck, I”ll want to have a copy of everything on another drive in case a drive goes down. I’ve just doubled my drive space needs.
Also, HDlog looks cool, except for the price tag. I have p2log which I use for my hvx200 and its great. My understanding is that it is designed for P2 only anyway.
What do y’all think?
