Then either don’t use the trimmer (i never do) or contact Sony Tech Support and report that the trimmer isn’t working properly. Once again, I would try capturing with Vegas because there could be something in the way the file was captured that is causing the problem.

  • It may be a version problem. According to Sony’s product comparison page, Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8 has AC3. You are using version 6 (2 versions behind!) so maybe your version doesn’t have AC3. The upgrade is only $45 so it might be worth it to get the latest version if you’re seriously getting into this.

  • I could not find any information on a Panasonic HD10a HD camera so I don’t know what format it records to (HDV, AVCHD, ?). I would try dropping the video directly onto the Vegas timeline and see if any audio shows up (bypass the whole trimmer thing). I’m guessing that Vegas doesn’t like something about how Windows Movie Maker captured the video. If dropping it on the timeline doesn’t produce audio then I would try capturing the video in Vegas.

That would only work if August was using a DV camera. The Canon XH-A1 is HDV and so I assume that the HDV capture tool is being used which doesn’t have this option.

Try capturing a tape first to make sure that your capture is working properly. I can’t imagine that Vegas would know the difference between a tape playing and video coming through live unless your camera is not sending live video out the firewire port? Maybe there is an option that needs to be set on your camera? I’ve got all Sony cameras and I see you have a Cannon so it might not work the same but Vegas is capable of capturing live if your camera cooperates. I’ve done it.

  • The flicker is caused by a combination of thin horizontal lines and interlacing. Since PAL video displays 50 interlaced fields per second there is the possibility that a horizontal line can be so thin that it is only one field thick. At 2 alternating fields per second, the line will display in one field and not the other thus flickering on and off 25 times a second.

As you have seen, rendering progressive removes the interlacing and thus gets rid of the problem. It does this at the risk of reduced resolution but the flickering is gone. You didn’t need Lagarith for this, you just needed to render progressive. Alternately you could set the Reduce Interlace Flicker property on the image events in Vegas. If that doesn’t remove it totally you could also add a 0.002 Gaussian Blur to the events to make the thin lines not a sharp.

The 5.1 Surround template is under Dolby Digital AC-3 as the “save as type”. Your project must be configured for 5.1 Surround Sound for it to be displayed. Perhaps the Movie Studio version doesn’t have the AC-3 encoder.

I think that’s a perfectly good solution to the problem. The overall video output will still be interlaced even though the PIP is progressive so it works out fine. Since the PIP is assumed to be smaller than the full screen you shouldn’t see any degradation in quality. This is exactly what I would have done given the same problem.

Yea I’ve done this. I just turn on my camera, start the capture utility and press the record button in the capture transport. Does this not work for you?

    Peter,

Thank you so much. Tell Dirk to tend to business first. I may have spoken to him at NAB 2008 this year. I did ask someone who was involved with Boris BLUE about this at NAB and I wrote down their response on a tiny piece of paper and by the time I got home from Vegas I has lost it. 🙁 Anyway, I’m at a point now where I’m looking to buy so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Steve,

Boris RED 4.3 has been very stable for me. I use it both stand-alone and as a plug-in for Vegas. You might want to check it out again.

Motor, Monet and Mokey look awesome (the demo videos were very impressive) but with a combined price tag of $12,590 USD they are definitely out of my budget. I just can’t business justify the cost when RED serves my needs for less than $1000. But I believe you when you say they are good. 😉
