  • Interlace Lines from Resizing Video

Posted by Jim Prisby on July 30, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I have found that when I resize my SD video to use in PIP or fit it below an overlay interlace lines become visible in the action scenes. I’ve tried using the event pan/crop tool, motion tracking 2D and 3D to resize the video but sometimes the lines are still there. This problem seems to be worse on footage transferred from analog video than digital video but I’ve had the problem on both. I have rendered it out to DVD and varified that the lines are still visible on TV. However, if I apply the smart interlace filter from Mike Crash the lines disappear since the video has been deinterlaced. I am creating this video for DVD so it will be rendered as interlaced footage. Is this the best method for resolving this problem? Are there other techniques that will work better? Will this method reduce the quality of my final video on the DVD?
    Thanks for your input.

I think that’s a perfectly good solution to the problem. The overall video output will still be interlaced even though the PIP is progressive so it works out fine. Since the PIP is assumed to be smaller than the full screen you shouldn’t see any degradation in quality. This is exactly what I would have done given the same problem.

Thanks for the reply, John. Just a follow up question. Is this interlace problem common when resizing SD video to a smaller size? I don’t do it very often but when I do I seem to have this problem quite often. I just don’t recall ever seeing instructions on any forums or training DVDs to deinterlace your video in Vegas before resizing.

It’s not that common and depends on the video content. Lots of action/movement and horizontal lines make it more pronounced. I’ve done lots of PIP’s without it but every once in a while you get a scene where for some reason the interlacing causes trouble.

it’s not as much the resize, as the shifting of a field in the resize if you perchance do this. Forcing a resample should have fixed it?
