You need to automate the blur amount and set it to zero when you don’t need it.

February 17, 2016 at 5:24 pm in reply to: Relocate Templates folder??

[Robin S. Kurz] “Which terminal command do you know of/use?”

You should use the ln command to create symbolic links. The syntax is:
ln -s [location of templates] "~/Movies/Motion Templates.localized"Where [location of templates] is the absolute or relative path to the templates.

For example, if you moved the templates to your Documents folder and kept the same folder name, the syntax would be:
ln -s "~/Documents/Motion Templates.localized" "~/Movies/Motion Templates.localized"Does that make sense? If not, tell me where you moved the Motion Templates folder to and if you renamed it and I’ll give you the exact syntax. Please note that OS X can hide extensions so “Motion Templates.localized” might show up as only “Motion Templates” in Finder. You need to supply the “real” name with nothing hidden for the symbolic link to work. Use Get Info on the folder to be sure you have the whole name.

I know this works because I just tried it by moving and renaming my Motion Templates folder and FCP X found it without a problem. In my example I did the following:
    cd ~/Movies
    mv "Motion Templates.localized" ../MyTemplates
    ln -s ../MyTemplates "Motion Templates.localized"
That moved my Motion Templates folder up one level into my Home folder and renamed it to “MyTemplates”. I then made a symbolic link back to the original location and FCP X found the templates.

BTW, this was all done on El Capitan. These are Unix commands and no future version of OS X is going to break them unless OS X leaves it’s Unix roots. 😉

You said that you created a symlink. The only way to do that is to open Terminal and issue a command. What command did you issue?

Or perhaps I should ask, “How did you create the symlink?”

Wow that is strange. I’m glad you figure out a workaround.

[Robin S. Kurz] “I’m able to create the symlink, but FCP X won’t go for it. It instead just creates a new Templates folder. Anyone a tip, idea etc.?”

What is the exact syntax that you are using to create the symlink?

[Omer Aydin] “I tested it on 2 different WAV files, one rejects the markers while the other keeps them.”

It sounds like you need to determine what’s different about the two WAV files. Is one of them read-only? Use a utility like MediaInfo to compare the contents. Are they the same? As you have seen, the markers should be saved with the WAV file. Check the read-only bit first. If they came from read-only media like a CD, they may have retained their read-only status.

February 17, 2016 at 12:10 pm in reply to: ProRes 422 files stop working in Vegas Pro

[Jeff Randle] “So, how would I make this conversion?”

Set your Vegas Pro project to a Pixel Format of 32-bit. Once you have GoPro Studio installed you can create a template for CineForm AVI following my tutorial:

Creating Cuneiform Templates in Vegas Pro

Then drop your ProRes 422 footage onto the timeline and render to CineForm. This should maintain a 10-bit file. You can use a utility like MediaInfo to check.

[Chris Jeremy] “But you can’t get multiple inputs as the card doesn’t speak ASIO so you will have to be satisfied with two mono (or one stereo) inputs only.”

Exactly! If you want to record multi-track audio in Vegas Pro, you will need an audio device that supports ASIO.

February 17, 2016 at 5:02 am in reply to: No shadow appearing

[Charles Herbert] “I’ve tried moving the files into one folder etc but I can affect the surface with the light but no shadows are cast over the map with different lights, different group arrangements and in all my other attempts.”

Here is what I found while looking at it… the first thing that looks wrong is that the Blend Mode on your “Location copy” groups are set to Normal but they should be set to Pass Through. You can select them all at once and change the Blend Mode and you’ll see shadows appear but only for the white circles.

The next thing that looks wrong is the “Red copy” groups (inside the Location groups) have their Type set to 3D but at that point it should still be 2D because it’s a composite 2D object at that level. Once you change those to 2D, the rest of the shadow will appear.

Finally, you’ll probably want to adjust the Opacity and Softness of the Shadows section from the Light in the scene.

Just a comment… I would have created the map rotated -90 degrees on the X axis. This way Y is up and down, and X is right and left, and Z is forward and back. This is how most 3D designers think. It was strange working in a project where the floor was standing on it’s side. 😉

Otherwise, it was a nice motion graphic. It looks like you put a lot of work into it.

Yes, both Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC produce compliant MPEG4 AVC/H.264 video.
