I’m glad that fixed things for you. If you want to edit AVC/H.264, then just convert it into an MPEG4 (.mp4) container. Vegas will work better with H.264 in an MP4 file than in an AVI file.

You don’t want to edit AVI files with H.264 in them. It will only cause problems later on when you go to render.

If you really want to, try installing the x264vfw64 codec (assuming you are using the 64-bit version of Movie Studio)

I would use a tool like AviDemux 2.5 to convert the files to Motion-JPEG. That will edit easily in Movie Studio.

[Oliver Peters] “Until someone comes up with better products that ALSO achieve critical mass, that won’t change.”

Fair enough… Affinity sure has come up with some very good competition to Photoshop and Illustrator with Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer (of which I’ve purchased both) but it’s the “critical mass” part that’s really hard to achieve. Adobe hasn’t had any real competition in that space in years so we’ll have to wait and see if Affinity can get a foothold into that market.

February 29, 2016 at 3:48 pm in reply to: Empty Audio Tracks with Multi Channel Audio

[Harry Maathuis] “Is there anyone who has experience with multi-channel audio using such a device?”

Just so we are clear… this has nothing to do with your audio device. I can create an 8 channel audio file with just my stereo laptop. This is about creating buses, routing tracks to buses, and then mapping buses to channels during the render. If you follow my tutorial, it should work.

Try it with mono channels like I did and see if that makes a difference.

    4K or HD?

HD should play fairly well but you may have problems with 4K.

[Oliver Peters] “I have regular designer who ends up working on a lot of projects that I work on. A big AE guy and he was trying to hold at CS6. He found it impossible to do, because the rest of the world that he has to interact with has moved on and embraced (willingly or not) CC.”

…and it’s even worse if you are in the Graphic Design world like my son is. You flat out can’t find a job if you don’t use Photoshop and Illustrator. I don’t believe the subscription model would work without Adobe having the monopoly that they do. You really don’t have a choice in some industries.

[Dustin Schoen] “When upload them in Vegas to edit, I noticed in the preview window, my phone video is choppy and the Gopro style video plays fine.”

    From what phone?

QuickTime is the native format for the Mac. If you want the best editing experience with QuickTime files you should buy a Mac. That’s one of the reasons I moved to Mac several years ago (i.e., more and more cameras are shooting Mac native formats)

Vegas Pro has added better support for new formats with each new version. I would download Vegas Pro 13 and see if your phone files play more smoothly with that. If so, it’s time to upgrade.

    +1

I switched from AE CS6 after Adobe went subscription so I use Motion 5 now and I find it a lot easier to use and the integration with FCP X templates makes it a far better choice for video editors that also do motion graphics.

  • [Dave McIntire] “Does anyone know if its the CPU or the graphics card that is involved in previewing a vid?”

A graphics card can help but not an NVIDIA. You want a powerful OpenCL card from AMD (e.g., the R9 290x/390x)

[Dave McIntire] “I’m taking your advice and trying MS 13 Platinum. “

My advice was to try Vegas Pro 13.0 not Movie Studio.

February 28, 2016 at 3:43 pm in reply to: FCP X Download on Second Computer and Apple ID issue

[Anna Birkas] “I am not sure whether I used his apple ID or mine and I can’t find FCP X in either of our apple store purchase histories.”

Apple purchase history is the authoritative source of purchases. If you sign out of the App Store and then sign in with your Apple ID and check your Purchased history, and then sign out again and sign in with your husbands Apple ID and check again, that’s as good as it gets. If it isn’t in one of those lists you might not have pursued it and just downloaded the trial as Bret suggests.

I’ve had this problem where going into the App Store has shown a price on FCP X on a new Mac but once I logout. login, and check my Purchased history it usually shows up with the “Install” button.

Of course if you pay with a credit card you could always check your credit card statements.
