Platinum 13 and AVI – Which codec am I missing?
I’ve been using Vegas since 11, and had upgraded to Platinum nearly a year ago. I have been using AVI since I started recording and vaguely recall having this issue when I first started, but what I did to overcome it is lost to me. Everything was fine until I did a clean install of Windows 10 over the weekend, and am now noticing I can’t import AVI files.
There have been several suggestions I’ve read to change to MP4 format, which I can do, however I have several AVI format recordings that I need to still edit and render.
I use Bandicam to record, using H264 (AMD APP), PCM audio. Vegas just gives me a NO sign when trying to import. I’m not sure which codec I need to install to correct this…

Interleave, preload duration : 9 msAm tempted to use K-Lite or Divx/FFD since I ONLY ever use Vegas to edit my Bandicam recordings, but not guaranteed they will work, and prefer not to mess with my clean install. Any guidance on the correct codec is appreciated!

Just did a test with Bandicam using MP4 instead of AVI, with both VBR and CBR, using the only audio format available, AAC, and it won’t import either. Really hate clean installs, they get very messy.

You don’t want to edit AVI files with H.264 in them. It will only cause problems later on when you go to render.
If you really want to, try installing the x264vfw64 codec (assuming you are using the 64-bit version of Movie Studio)
I would use a tool like AviDemux 2.5 to convert the files to Motion-JPEG. That will edit easily in Movie Studio.

THanks, I did find x264vfw installer in my old downloads backup folder, so maybe that’s what I used…will try that.
I did use Motion-JPEG for a while, but the file sizes were ridiculous…like 1GB per minute of recording. With H264 I get around half of that size and still really good quality. Given all these issues, if x264vfw doesn’t help, then I may go back to Motion-JPEG.

x264vfw64 seemed to do the trick! Though I did notice that I couldn’t drag from my explorer folder into vegas still, I could at least add the media and it would place into the timeline just fine.

I fixed the drag and drop from windows explorer by following another thread’s suggestion to NOT run Vegas as administrator. I guess in all the troubleshooting I had set it to run as admin. Changed it back and now all is right with the world!

I’m glad that fixed things for you. If you want to edit AVC/H.264, then just convert it into an MPEG4 (.mp4) container. Vegas will work better with H.264 in an MP4 file than in an AVI file.
