MOV files not opening in vegas 11 or 12
I can’t get my MOV files to open in Sony Vegas 11 or 12.
I got a new laptop and can’t get my vids to open now. I’ve downloaded the latest version of Quicktime and it’s still not working.
It was working fine on my old laptop.
Any ideas?

Open the MOV file in Quicktime Player, use Ctrl+I to bring up the Inspector and see what codec the file requires. Then make sure that codec is installed. For example, Avid DNxHD is not installed by default so you would need to install that separately if that’s the codec that the file requires.

I got it. Thanks for your help again. I installed an older version Quicktime and restored Vegas 12 to default settings.

That was going to be my next suggestion. I forget which version of Vegas Pro got broken by the new QuickTime and you have to go back to an older version.
That’s the problem with using old software… you have to keep the rest of your computer back-leveled because newer versions of other components can break it.

I have one more unrelated question and instead of starting another thread, I’ll ask here.
I’m using my phone and a Gopro style camera. They are both MOV files.
When upload them in Vegas to edit, I noticed in the preview window, my phone video is choppy and the Gopro style video plays fine.

From what phone?
QuickTime is the native format for the Mac. If you want the best editing experience with QuickTime files you should buy a Mac. That’s one of the reasons I moved to Mac several years ago (i.e., more and more cameras are shooting Mac native formats)
Vegas Pro has added better support for new formats with each new version. I would download Vegas Pro 13 and see if your phone files play more smoothly with that. If so, it’s time to upgrade.

4K or HD?
HD should play fairly well but you may have problems with 4K.
